It cannot be extended without the approval of the 27 EU members.
No, but it could be unilaterally withdrawn, which was established in a recent Court case -- and, in any case, since we are constantly being told that the EU wants to keep the UK inside, then I think it's generally accepted that if we asked for an extension the EU would quickly grant it.

How ironic, though, if they did not, and the reason we finally ended up crashing out was because the EU refused to extend Article 50...

jim, yes but if they do that they are in effect blocking brexit.
Well, a delay in Brexit isn't quite the same as blocking altogether, though.

"How ironic, though, if they did not, and the reason we finally ended up crashing out was because the EU refused to extend Article 50... " - delicious thought!
I was merely pointing out that the political landscape is changing by the day (if not the hour) and to say there are only two options is incorrect.
The EU have already stated that the will not agree to an extension of Article 50 unless an agreement has been reached.
No deal Brexit is the only choice. If you value your freedom.

//Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit “deal” is a deviously engineered, triple-lock trap which will leave Britain stuck for all eternity in the European Union, an anonymous civil servant has confirmed.
The civil servant, writing at Brexit Central, describes May’s Withdrawal Agreement as an “Orwellian misnomer”. Far from helping Britain to leave the EU it keeps it perpetually bound in chains.
He or she goes on to detail the three locks which have been cunningly inserted into the Withdrawal Agreement by legalistically-minded civil servants who know exactly how to sabotage Brexit.
First is the transition period, lasting until at least 2021.
We must hand over an estimated £39 billion for nothing, be bound by EU law and take orders from an unelected Joint Committee operating under the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. Will the EU27 agree an equitable free trade agreement before the end of 2020? Unlikely, since all the goodies they want in the “future partnership” are set out in the Northern Ireland backstop, which kicks in automatically on 1st January 2021…
Second is the backstop.
Not only does the backstop carve out Northern Ireland as an EU province and set a border in the Irish Sea, it creates a partial “customs union” that requires us to implement EU trade tariffs and policy with no decision-making powers. Under highly restrictive “non-regression clauses”, the UK also agrees to implement all EU environmental, competition, state aid and tax harmonisation laws, with the unelected Joint Committee and the ECJ once again able to punish us for any perceived backsliding.
Third is the “future partnership”.
Anyone expecting the EU27 to give up the immense advantages they gain under the backstop is delusional. Retaining tariff-free access to the UK market and effective control of UK trade and competition policy must be nirvana for them. To ensure they reap the full benefit, there is the third and final lock in the Withdrawal Agreement. Unless we agree to a “future partnership” as set out in the political declaration, the backstop will endure in perpetuity.
And this is the deal not just Remainers like Theresa May and Philip Hammond but even lapsed Brexiteers like Michael Gove assure us we must sign up to if we are to have any hope of securing Brexit.
“No deal is better than a bad deal,” May once assured us.
By what token is this abject surrender not a “bad deal”?
Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?
If so, then I heartily recommend this debut offering in the Sun from Quentin Letts, the columnist who left the Daily Mail in protest at the pro-Remain policies of its new editor.
Politics in Britain at present, and across the whole of Europe for that matter, is an open, sloshing bucket of inflammable petrol. We don’t need any sparks.
Since the days of Oliver Cromwell, Parliament has existed for two reasons — to represent the views of the people and to pass laws.
In the first respect, it is failing lamentably.
You do not have to be a politics wonk to see that Remainer Tory MPs are combining with Labour and other Opposition parties to try to neutralise the referendum result.
It was the largest ever vote in British history and 300 careerist MPs think they can block it.
Please can we have our democracy back?//
What's to stop the application being withdrawn and re-submitted, meaning the two-year deadline begins again?
Stop C&Ping other people's stuff, Togo. Have an original thought for a change.
"...and, in any case, since we are constantly being told that the EU wants to keep the UK inside, then I think it's generally accepted that if we asked for an extension the EU would quickly grant it."

I don't think so, Jim. The EU27 would be far more likely to achieve their aim of keeping the UK in the EU if they refused an extension. Our options (assuming Mrs May's deal is politely declined in the HoC on Tuesday) are No Deal or to withdraw A50 entirely. No Deal is, apparently, out of the question. If A50 is withdrawn then it is unlikely in the extreme ever to be invoked again. Politicians in the UK have no confidence in their country and will have thus lost the best chance they will ever have to take the country off in a different, more prosperous direction. The loss of their credibility would be enormous and the UK's standing in the world would be irretrievably diminished, but that's not something that's really bothered most politicians in recent years.
WE can only hope the MP's get a conscience and deliver what was voted for.

Haha......rattled or ratty? Far to accurate for you then?

No deal Brexit is the only choice. If you value your freedom.
// far right extremism is a good thing // TTT

oh gawd - he's at it again - and I said somewhere that AB threads started off as semi logical and went off the rails

clearly I am wrong
// It cannot be extended without the approval of the 27 EU members.//

are you sure about that ? we are negotiating with one body called the EU not with 27 separate members
and if you recollect our main grouse is that there isnt enough country participation in collective decisions

oh well - too complicated for me !
Question Author
oh look pee pee takes middle of sentence out of context, genius!
PP //oh well - too complicated for me !//
Agreed
"...are you sure about that ? we are negotiating with one body called the EU not with 27 separate members"

I cannot speak for others but I am sure about that. The EU must gain the unanimous agreement of all its remaining 27 members before A50 can be extended.
PP Article 50(3) says, "The Treaties shall cease to apply to the State in question from the date of entry into force of the withdrawal agreement or, failing that, two years after the notification referred to in paragraph 2, unless the European Council, in agreement with the Member State concerned, unanimously decides to extend this period."
Yes Judge. Do you think that Italy? Hungary? Greece? Or others in the Eastern bloc of the EUSSR will agree, or will they say NO in order to shake the Brussels elite to the core. Nice.
