But defrosting a bit of dough needs no real man input to the extent of getting the ingredients out, mixing them, kneading them etc.

Anyway, I assume the Tesco management have costed this all out. Whether it means they will lose footfall overall I dont know. It wont bother me because my fresh stuff comes from the local shops but I wonder to what extent their fresh counters are really used.

It used to be said that the big supermarkets such as Tesco were killing the high street, hereiam.

I will be very disappointed to see the fresh food counters close at my local Tesco. I don't like buying pre-packaged cooked meats, or pre packaged fish. I want to be able to buy the quantity I want.

Do you think it will see more business for the little shops on high streets, like butchers, bakers , green grocers?

Pasty, if it does then that will be good news. I do try to go to the butchers but it's bang in the town centre, no parking so.. It's one of them. If they were actually accessible i'd go to the mall the while. CBA paying £2 parking to try help the highstreet by buying more expensive meat

Anyone else have memories of going to the "High Street" butchers with their mothers maybe twice a week? I remember having a great time making patterns in the saw-dust on the floor with my feet:)

No, I don't, Patsy. People seem content to buy the pre-packaged goods from Lidl and Aldi, and all the other supermarkets.
Even my local butchers pre-packs his cooked meats. I go much further away to another butcher but it isn't practical to go there twice a week or more.

The trouble is many of these little traditional bakers, butchers, grocers, fishmongers have gone out of business. It might help save some existing ones but I cant see too many new ones springing up.

My butchers is still like that, Salmac.
I remember going to the Co-Op butcher for the meat, then to the Co-op greengrocer a couple of doors down, finally the bakery. The fish shop on Friday. It was a bit of a palaver back in the 60s, shopping.

They need to make em more accessible now people can drive. Get yer butchers a free car park and i'll be there erryday.

The last thing I want is a traditional grocer, standing for ages at the counter whilst the assistant fetches the items on your list and the queue grows longer and longer.

You do not have to defrost frozen dough, you can already buy from pastries etc and cook from frozen

Your arms would grow longer and longer, too, holding the bags from the butchers, bakers, greengrocers and the rain water puddled round your feet from your mac.

RR, search "cooking dough from frozen". Everyone says defrost it overnight. It has to be done.

Hc, I remember my mother pushing a huge pram with my sister in it. There was a large compartment in it under the baby, and she shoved stuff in there!:)
