How do we feel about this case? Obviously the man committed an act of paedophilia, but is he to blame, and should he be punished when he had no clue of the girls real age, as she said she was 19?

Could the man claim entrapment? Not that the girl wanted the man to be caught...

It's an oddun.

Can't help but feel sorry for this man. There are girls these days who deliberately set out to make themselves look much older than they really are. And as for this man being put on the Sex Offender's Register for life when they didn't even have sex seems wrong. In my mind the crime he did commit was in taking sexually explicit photos of the girl and sending them to his friend. Although at the time he didn't know her actual age he did commit a crime. Her friends will know what she's done and I suspect it won't be long before it's circulating on Social Media. She has ruined a person's life. She should be named and shamed .
Mrs_Danver.

You gave an opinion - but it's an opinion I disagree with.

With hindsight 'naive' was the wrong adjective to use for your thoughts. 'Wrong' would have been more accurate.

Until 2 years ago I was around a lot of 12 year old girls - as my daughter is now 14, I am now around a lot of 14 year old girls. IF my experience is anything to go by I simply refuse to accept it is possible to confuse a 12 year old with a 19 year old.

The above said, let's assume for the argument (an argument which I don't believe in) that a 12 year old girl could dupe somebody into believing she was 19. As unbelievable as that is from a physical point of view, as soon as she opened her mouth any man with even a tiny modicum of common sense would realise, and quickly, that he was talking to a child.

So, I simply do not buy that it is possible for a 12 year old to pass themselves off as a 19 year old. Even though it is only 7 years, there is a yawning chasm between a 12 year old and a 19 year old.

For the above reasons you are wrong. Not naive, but just simply wrong.

Odd - you've been a member for 5 minutes, so I'm surprised my writing style is familiar. Could you let me know who I was previously please?

I only singled you out because you addressed a question to me. I'm a polite bloke so I thought it only fair that I respond to you....and you will see from my previous post that I admitted I was wrong call you naive. Wrong, yes - naive, no.

I'm pleased you're easily amused.

Absolute sense, Deskdiary.

Strange that it is always friends of the daughter that look and act much older and never the daughter.
And yet Talbot, at 10.35 and 10.44 yesterday Mrs_Danver called you naive for having the temerity to suggest (in essence) that it is easy to confuse a 12 year old with 19 year old.

No, I don't get that (wrong) idea either.
To clarify....

That you could NOT confuse a 12 year old with a 19 year old.
You posted what I would have posted...If I could be bothered.

It's not the first time Retrodanver has called me naive.
There have always been girls who look and act older than they are.
The man in question didn’t commit an act of paedophilia if he believed the girl was 19 and if she was physically mature enough to pass as 19.

Paedophiles are attracted to prepubescent children - not just anyone under the age of 16.
A 12 year old girl could possibly pass for 19 on a photo with make-up and filters, even perhaps at first sight but I don't believe for a second once she took her clothes off or started making conversation that he didn't realise she was under age.
Exactly, Prudie.

I have no sympathy for him at all.
I don’t have sympathy for him. I just wouldn’t call him a paedophile.
Fully agree, he is not a paedophile nor did he commit an act of paedophilia. Either he thought she was 19 or pre-pubescent, can't have it both ways.
A 27 year old man doesn't get tricked into committing sexual acts with a 12 year old.

Call me naive but I think he is lying that he believed her to be 19
I also don't think for one minute he thought she was 19 either as I said, but I'd guess he assumed she'd at least reached puberty.
the girl herself said she claimed to be 19.
jno
the girl herself said she claimed to be 19.

And?
she said she was 19, he thought she was 19. Not a big leap. You shouldn't be too ready to assume they had long conversations about third form homework assignments that might have given her away.
Why don't you google ---'12 years old girls',click on images and you can see pics. Granted they don't all look 19 years old but about a dozen definitely do.
JNO says "he said she was 19, he thought she was 19. Not a big leap."

Mate, I know you tend to take to take the contrary point for the sake of taking a contrary point of view, but even you must think you're skating on pretty thin ice by thinking this is is acceptable.

Or don't you? Hmmm!
