Better than prison would be community service; whereby offenders have to wear highly identifiable (and slightly ridiculous) overalls and pick up litter and scrub graffiti from off walls.
Cost very little to administer, they learn a lesson and society gains - it's win-win.

AOG; I never wore boy scout uniform, but we lads in mufti also used to have Bowie knives and make fiendish catapults and bows & arrows.
Community service is generally an alternative to short term prison sentences. I presume the pitchfork branding mob want them to be taken off the streets for longer than a couple of months?
brandishing
Another example of bad justice. Judge has just given bail to 17 year old accused of murder.

sorry wrong thread oops
Danny,I presume you mean it is bad justice because the accused is a threat to society.I'm sure the sitting judge had very good reasons for his/her decision.

We are never privy to the full facts of any case.
This country is fast becoming a 'No can do' society. Any suggestion to thwart rising murder and other crimes is generally met with we could never go back to those methods,we haven't got enough prisons,it would be against their human rights, that takes away their dignity, by doing that you sink to their standards etc etc.
It seems nobody has the cajones to stand up and make the bloody system work for the benefit of the law abiding innocents and deriment of the repeat offenders.
Make more prisons with harsh regimes. Hard labour. Work or no privileges. Little contact with the outside world.
For god's sake try it and stop caving in and dismissing it with negativity. These monsters deserve no pity or consideration to their feelings .They show no mercy to anyone else.
ag, It is not that many years ago that anyone charged with murder was invariably remanded in custody. As this was a stabbing I would have thought that it warranted a remand in custody.
Retrocop, interesting! Do you think that new prison staff positions would be easily filled?!

Danny,I don't doubt that used to happen in yesteryear.
Retro; Prisons and harsh sentences are not the answer, this is top-down thinking, i.e. trying to deal with the problem after the event and is too simplistic, we have to look more at the causes.
The Scottish approach, is not only the right direction, but it seems to work;

Well said, Khandro.

(you may have to read that twice)
"It costs roughly £37k a year to 'house' a prisoner x 2326 = £86m EXTRA a year. Anyone think this has a bearing? " - outsource it then, ideally to a country that knows how to run a nick. I reckon if we paid the Thailand 10K a man they'd do it, we'd save a fortune.
dam it's ZM, just going to buy some jelly and nails!
I've seen frequently on police programmes on the TV how hard the police work to catch the thugs and how much abuse and violence they have to put up with from the thugs and THEN the stupid judges give a lenient sentence or no sentence at all !!! Beggars belief.
That's TROB for you mate!
Maybe Holland still has a few spaces?

But would this cost any less?
Zacs-Master

"It costs roughly £37k a year to 'house' a prisoner x 2326 = £86m EXTRA a year."

How much is a length of rope with a knot at the end?
retrocop, exactly...liberal thinking has got us into this mess, exasperated by ECHR and over population of the wrong sort
we all know what ethnicity are doing all the stabbings, then we get
ohh they are marginalized, no one is, this is all about personal choices
so not all people are clever, but that does not stop anyone learning a trade apprenticeship, brickies carpenters sparks plasterer etc.
