A costly victory? Soon to be ex-wife speaks out.

Given what we know, how would you assess her comments regarding his commitment to the family and 'follow your dreams' comment?

It's always going to be down to the individuals involved. For some seeing their partner excel will be more than enough for others it wont be.

We are all different.
The article in your link makes a point of 'personality changes' due to the injuries he received in his accident, ag. I wonder just how much of that is responsible for the impending divorce? You meet someone, fall in love with that person, marry and have kids. Then that person is involved in an accident and becomes another person almost entirely. I think that going back to uni and pursuing the idea of rowing in the boat race may have been his way of overcoming the difficulties and his personal 'demons'.

// 'personality changes' due to the injuries he received in his accident, //

Yes,Ken,a considerable factor surely so is it fair to blame him entirely for pursuing his 'dreams' and question his commitment towards his family?

They remain close and she seems to be taking some credit for his achievement albeit tongue in cheek?
front lobe damage does that - it appears to have made him very egotistical - probably was before as you need a healthy dose of focus and determination to win Olympic golds and the rest - this injury has just intensified it. A shame that his marriage has largely gone but better to end all the frustration and I remember reading that he was incredibly short-fused after returning from the States and they nearly separated back then - has this continued?
I've just Googled her and it would appear that she hasn't exactly been a stay at home mother while hubby was busy pursuing his dreams. She has presented several radio and tv shows, co-written a book, opened a Happy Birth Club and writes for several newspapers. Of course, there are two sides to every coin and it is to be hoped that their divorce is as amicable as is possible.
Why do people believe every bit of tittle-tattle in the Daily Mail (and tittle-tattle is all that the DM contains)?
What about believing what is written in The Times, diddlydo, is that to be recommended?
Question Author
//Why do people believe every bit of tittle-tattle in the Daily Mail//

The article refers to comments made by his wife directly.

Do you not accept her version of events?
//A costly victory? Soon to be ex-wife speaks out. //

he rode his bike into a lorry sort of
and splattered his frontal lobes over the road

and so was converted by this injury into a zombie

his wife quite understandably said after eight years - this isnt the man I married. Perils of riding a bike
Question Author
//he rode his bike into a lorry sort of //

Sort of? He was caught by a lorry's wing mirror PP!
// The article refers to comments made by his wife directly.

well clearly she wasnt there when he was injured
BUT .... the neurologist said - he rang his own bell ( eek! I dont think I would say that to a pt's wife) and then talked of contre-coup ( yup in the DM)
and that can be interpreted as his head was shaken so badly that the frontal lobe inside when splat! against one side of the skull and then splat! against the other

so he now doesnt have functioning frontal lobes
you need them - take it from me....

very very sad story - I hope he cleaned up in the civil courts
// Sort of? He was caught by a lorry's wing mirror PP!/
/details - mere details
frontal lobes nichty nochty in AB speak

I paint broad brosh strokes like the arteest Vermeer

PP using artistic licence!!
"Perils of riding a bike."
Yet that other well known cyclist, Jeremy Vine, didn't have to fall off his bike to undergo a personality change. He just appeared on 'Strictly' :-)
somebody does well, the Mail immediately seeks a quote from someone who doesn't like him. She could maybe have kept quiet for a week or two and let him enjoy his success before putting the boot in (however well deserved it may be - which of course I don't know)..
Question Author
//She could maybe have kept quiet for a week or two and let him enjoy his success //

She did congratulate him even if she did try to claim some credit for it ;-)
in a way I don't blame her; she's in the middle of a divorce and a journalist calls up saying "They're calling your husband a hero, how do you feel about that?" But I call it crap journalism.
Question Author
It's a shame the marriage has capsized but it seems that his accident went a very long way to this outcome.
I agree, jno, it's not as if she just stuck her oar in.
jno; Her comment wasn't in response to some journo phoning her. Within the article there is a copy of a tweet she sent in which she says, "Having been quiet for the last few weeks, i've written ONE piece which you can read in tomorrow's @thetimes. Behind every great man an' all that."
