An officer is within his rights to protect both himself and the public - but this officer looked like he was in over his head, and lost control of the situation, as the suspect was in handcuffs.

We often hear that stop and search should be expanded - but does this highlight an training issue that needs to be addressed first?

sp, This incident could have happened at any time.The fact the the officer went over the top in making an arrest has no bearing on stop and search.

The regular issue truncheon is quite short isn't it? Surely a extendable weapon such as the one being used here is much more efficient.

No chance the prisoner is a coke fiend being subdued so the lone officer can cope until backup arrives I suppose.

Trial by non-timestamped video is not allowed, try using one as evidence of, say, a shoplifter caught in the act if you don't believe me.

Based purely on the video his reaction was OTT and that sounded to be borne out by those there who would have see more.

On the wider issue of Stop and Search obviously training is key.

A couple of clouds on the legs with the truncheon persuaded the felon to behave though did it not? Perhaps we need more, not less, stop and search and we may see a reduction in knife murders in due course. Did you read the bit about his runaway partner in crime assaulting the officer who finally apprehended him? Or is that not news worthy enough? Huff and puff strike again.

Dannyk13, I'm sure that the truncheon was efficient; however, I am thinking that the extendable ones are more so in the fact that you can keep your distance from the "prisoner" who might suddenly pull a knife on you when you quite close to him using a shorter weapon. And I would think that they are sort of flexible and thus would have a 'whipping' effect when being swung thus being more powerful.

I take it that stop and search means that an officer doesn't know that a person is doing/carrying something illegal but their spidey sensors are twitching.

And yes, just from watching the video and knowing nothing else about the situation I would say that the cop's actions are not warranted.

sanmac, those flexible batons are very light and I wouldn't fancy relying on one to stop a drunk crazed hooligan or any other offender for that matter.
