To the best of my knowledge there was never any follow up complaint or legal action if a prisoner had to be taken forcibly to court.

why didnt they light a pile of rubber tyres under the tree where he was 'hiding' ( leaving aside whether you can hide if everyone knows where you are) and then when the acrid smoke makes him fall out of the tree or better - jump !
then throw petrol on hiim .....
and toss a pair of handcuffs into the flagration
and tell the judge it is his own fault for not cuffing himself
