Saw on BBC news tonight, 4 men attacked 2 gay women and apparently have been arrested. Nothing much to say except aren't they brave ? The words I would like to use are not printable !!

Concur with Danny. The forces can be the making of many young men. It can give a sense of purpose and a direction in life. There are of course exceptions...

The very last people I want in the armed services are deliquant little thugs like this. We want the best of the best not everyone else's dysfunctional left overs. Untrainable they certainly would be, common sense tells one that, you don't need 'experience' of being a serving soldier.

I don't dismiss your experience as a RAF brat at RAF Kai Tak or wherever but I do wonder what you may have witnessed when recalcitrant square pegs are bought to task in the billet,or latrine block.

My brother was one of those square pegs and I saw what was done to him and no it didn’t sort him out just helped to turn him into even more of a thug

The 'drill pigs' are now forbidden to shout or bawl to shape recruits into order. Certain punishments are forbidden if it is too hot on the parade square The word 'Bull' is taboo. You get the gist.

With the greatest respect (and I do mean that), that is the problem with what you are discussing and proposing Danny/ Retro etc. You cannot judge what will happen by what would have happened when you were in the army/ Police/ wherever relevant, because that was a very long time ago and that world does not exist anymore, so you cannot expect the same results to occur, if indeed for the most part it ever did work- there were plenty f thugs around who did National Service. It's like expecting today's parents to rear their kids the same way you were,however good that was, it's not possible now because virtually everything is different. x

This is a frightening article and will explain why the armed forces can no longer achieve their aim for 'all' to eventually gel and become a disciplined team. Recruits can question authority and buck the system these days . :-(

My son went to Pirbright in 2003 and I think he would have been eternally grateful to have been able to use those cards.
