It more or less never happens. Diplomatic relations as a whole get suspended between countries, but not individual ambassadors. It's understood as a matter of principle that countries choose their own ambassadors and that other countries work with that person if they want to have diplomatic relations at all.

Do you suppose there is any truth in the rumour of a particular conspiracy which goes like this:
UK is "nurtured" into a Brexit decision. "Useful" people ensure Brexit takes place. Brexit matures and grows up to be a "deal" between UK and USA. "Deal" is heavily subsidised and made to taste so sweet that UK applies to become no.51. On reaffirmation of the "Greatest President Ever" USA is made great again by approving UK at last officially arrives where it longs to be, Great again - Star Spangled Banner hoisted over Westminster, Buckingham Palace, etc., Hail to the Chief. Purple Hearts awarded to The Useful, commendations for unswerving adoration of the Chief available on application (proof of abandon required).

Stop pretending that there is any hypocrisy other than your own here, AOG. Let's be clear here: the principle is that UK ambassadors should be able, and are required, to say what they see without fear. That applies to Trump's US presidency, to the Pakistani government, to every other state in the world right now.
If you cannot see that, and if you cannot see that the fault here is entirely down to the person who leaked these comments -- and to Boris Johnson, for failing to stand up for Sir Kim last night -- then it is you who misunderstand diplomacy.

(*) o thank you for returning to this point
oK yeah I agree you ( dear sweet AOG) arent a pregnant wombat - -- - - BUT
In the Memorandum written by Vaclav Havel - yeah that is Vats-lav - the only hit play written by a president I think
and televised in the sixties Beeb - Thumb may have been Murray Melvin actually - the actor who looks like the groom in van eyck's Wedding in the groninge museum in er Bruges
they have an office language - ptydepe - ( tie-deep in English but probably puh-tie-deppay in Cz\ech) - and those who know Czech plays written by presidents will recollect
the commonest word in commerce is productivity, and in ptydepe is 'gh' - - - guh -huh
and the longest word is - the ptydepe for 'pregnant wombat'
'f' is unassigned and a member of the class the swot ..... answers that this is reserved for a word that becomes more common than productivity....
The memorandum written in ptydepe is never translated
it is a satire on Stalinist paper propaganda .....
so when I think of you AOG - I also think of a) vaclav havel, b) the memorandum, c) Murray Melvin or was it Warren Mitchell ? said to have done time in Oz for kissing kids d) ptydepe and e) other plays written by presidents
Poor Sir Kim - an ambassady is an honest man sent abroad to lie for his country
and doesnt necessarily agree to be thrown under a bus so that X can be ambassady instead and Y a prime minister

A lot of commentators are reporting that Sir Kim's decision to resign was at least partly based on Boris Johnson's refusal last night to back him, meaning that, in all probability, Johnson would have sacked Sir Kim in a month or so anyway. Better to resign now than to drag on the disruption for a month. Whether he would have stayed until December had Johnson backed him nobody can say now, but to have no backing from the likely next PM can't have helped.

/// I thought it was quite affectionate. What's wrong with a pregnant Wombat? Quite endearing. ///
If you say so, but I have been brought up not dragged up as you appear to have been.
But if I am behind the times and such descriptions are now affectionate and endearing and obviously don't break any AB rules, then I will drag myself into the 21st century and call some of our female members 'Pregnant Wombats' I am sure they will appreciate that.

AOG, how can you complain about Site Rules and then write 'I have been brought up not dragged up as you appear to have been'.
You're one huge hypocrite.

The Germans ( ha! ) tried to assassinate their own ambassady in the thirties
von Papen - war hero from 1914 and opponent to Hitler was exiled as an ambassady somewhere.....
and whilst he had kaffee und cochen
and someone went splat - I mean really went splat all over the street - blood everywhere
and the story was: two men, two bombs one smoke for escape and one explosive to KILL, and they got togevva and said to each other - why dont we do the smoke bomb first and not second....?
and it wasnt it was anuvva bomb and so they blew themselves up
Von Papen - unlucky man - tried as a war criminal 1946
what was his defence ? I cant be - my own side tried to kill me in 1937....

We'll not know if it was inevitable or not, and as I say, the impression is that the decision was only made this morning. But compare Hunt's response of backing our officials to the hilt to Johnson's of dithering and more or less allowing Trump to get his way, and it's clear whose response is more appropriate and more in keeping with the role of ambassador.
