We want N Ireland to be in a customs union with the rest of the UK.
This is a circle that cannot easily - if at all for now - be squared.
Hence the backstop which may come into effect after the transition period.
There are no “plots” by the EU, the UK or anyone else

jordy:
"Headache TIME" - Perhaps for the VBQ
"Boris Johnson now prime minister" - you can't pull the wool over your eyes!
"Leaves EUSSR with No Deal" - it is innevitable given their intransigence
"Irish border chaos" - there will be no change, there is not chaos now
"Scotland vote to leave Britain" - if they do they also leave the EUSSR
"Scotland join EUSSR" - they'll be vetoed by at least Spain and France and will quickly beg to rejoin the UK
"Scottish border more chaos" - not really
"There will always be an England" - correct

It’s always the wrong decision or wrong result when you haven’t won or got your way. That’s life in a nut shell.
That is especially true when you don’t look at subjects with a critical eye or only from one perspective. Especially if you make all your decisions about the world from the left leaning liberal MSM. The kaleidoscope of life is not left or right or even the middle it is splattered all over the spectrum. So to look only from one angle is to be forever ill informed.

As mentioned, the other side can do as many random checks at the destination as they want. Their choice. Most likely few will be needed. If it's up to UK standard why would it not be up to EU standard ? But if the EU want a border post, despite denying it, they are at liberty to have one. Their option.
ich:"suppose the UK does a trade deal with the US which involves us accepting food manufacturing standards that don’t come up to EUSSR standards. ... " - nowt to do with the EUSSR, other nations have different regs on all sorts of things. That's the point we do the deal not the EUSSR, we don't care what their regs are.
