Rnli Slammed For Spending Millions On Foreign Aid
//Bosses last week warned the lifeboat charity is facing “some major challenges” after making losses of £6.3million last year. But donations to the service are being spent on creches in Bangladesh and swimsuits for Muslim women in Tanzania.
Tory MP Nigel Evans, who sits on the Commons International Development Committee, said the charity is putting its reputation at risk.
He added: “I would say 99 per cent of the British public giving them money do not have the faintest idea it’s diverted to projects overseas.”//

This is one charity I thought was struggling and really needed the money to continue its excellent work around our shores. I certainly wasn’t aware that a proportion of my donations are going overseas. Will this information put this charity’s reputation at risk?

I take part in 20+ charity quizzes every month from the small to the large - I do them on trust and don't investigate every one.
I feel for the RNLI that including the overseas aid should be more open in literature, posters and leaflets so those who wish do can decide from there.

//Two teenagers drowned off one of our busy beaches a few weeks ago. If the RNLI want to squander the mobey they’re given they might consider setting up a beach watch scheme to save more lives here.//
A tragedy, but NOT contributing to the people best suited to helping people in trouble is cutting off the nose to spite the face.
Hopefully the public reaction to this revelation will see the RNLI see more transparency in their funding, and more importance to UK funding.

My gut reaction to this was the same as everybody else's. It's not what anybody will have expected, and I don't anticipate that the "saving lives elsewhere" response will resonate. But there was no deceit, I don't think it's "misuse" of funds, and the absolute worst reaction is to cut off funding to a vital charity that has saved many thousands of lives in the most hazardous conditions.
We can't be governed here by our anger. It's not about supporting the RNLI's choice to engage in overseas projects. It's about not letting your disapproval affect the support they still need.

At one point, the RNLI was the wealthiest charity in this country. Wherever you went, there always seemed to be one of those lifeboat collection boxes on the counter. In the early days of the first Blair govt, they were one of several charities that were threatened with losing their charity status because they were making profits exceeding the donations they received. How times change.
Also, in answer to sanmac, I'm not "more concerned" that people weren't researching. I'm only saying that this story could have broken at any point in the last several years: it has never been hidden. I can't see the point in getting het up about something *now* that I could have learned years ago, had I got around to it.

In bad taste, certainly. Sackable offence? I think for a volunteer charity I would have stuck with a severe reprimand.

It gets worse, doesn't it?
Nobody is suggesting that the victims of the monsoon don't deserve sympathy and help. And Jims and charity norganisers everywhere can sympathise and help, can't they? If they so choose.
But it is not the prerogative of the person soliciting funds to help dogs to then decide that the money (or part of it) should be spent helping cats.
Naturally, when you've spent so much of your time being told that the rabble need to be instructed by its betters ( in the rabble's own best interest of course) my argument will carry little weight. Or none.
