I know they are in the process of being relaxed.

However my husband works away - got of his flight - picked up hire car and went Asda for some groceries and booze. He was in Q as they announced at 9.50pm anyone wishing to purchase alcohol to make their way to till.He was already there so didnt bother himself. When it was his turn the checkout girl announced she was shutting down.He moved to next till and when it was his turn again it was one minute past 10 and the till is programmed not to scan alcohol. He went ape - spoke to manger and said he only wanted a can of beer when he got home.(He cant drink whilst away)

Point being - this is draconian - IMO.Also this cant buy alcohol until 12.30 on Sun - ie until the Churchy people have finished worshipping is ridiculous.

Smacks of Big Brother and forcing other peoples antiquated opinions down your throat.(Holier than thou). What do others think?Bearing in mind you can buy fags rolls milk etc.

Whilst I can understand the gentleman being annoyed by the store's organisation (though I would have pointed out the predicament to the till operator closing the till), I am curious as to why people get so het up over the licensing hours. It's not as if alcohol is necessary to live on, is it?

As for the smug lawyer guy: If you had tried that in my shop, I would have been more than happy to call the police and stay late. I hate bullies.

Well said LeMarchand. It's not so much he is a bully, it's more of a deep seated insecurity. I am sure he is a middle aged man who is a little over weight with no real love in his life. He further pretends to be some top drawer lawyer yet assumes we are all ignorant, hence any legal dictum he puts can be taken to pieces by any "A" level law student. I strongly imagine he is very lonely and living in some place like Ipswich.

But hey ho, he's wealthier than me. Because money is so important isn't it????.

Further if I had a shop and danny (cool name, NOT!) came in arguing the odds I would probably just resort to primal violence and punch him. I envisage he is not much of a man.

OMG I am in agreement with WM again. Another lie down called for!

I said I wouldnt post again oneeyepric.

My husband was buying a bottle of champagne to surprise me with along with an couple of cans of beer.It was a surprise for my birthday.

If you dont drink alcohol - fine.

If we choose to to - fine.

What is the problem?

Why are some people so fired up.At the end of the day I would have drunk the champagne and had a cosy night with my hubby who I hadnt seen for a fortnight.

What has speed limits etc got to do with the fact you cant buy alcohol 24/7?

I resent the fact that some people seem to perceive we are alcohol dependant. We are not but what if we were what is it to anyone else. Some people would be having a fleepy if they ran out of fags.

For oneeyepric - do you think honestly by husband is some sort of a knob - he's not.Had the checkout girl put a sign up she was finishing her shift he would have moved -DOH!!!!She didnt. Enjoy Church today???

And the aforementioned goes for you Le Marchand.

Cant stand honestly people who think thay are better than thou.

Bet you have a few wee secrets up your sleeve.

At least all we are conplaining about in the public domain are the licensing laws/

However my thread has been hi-jacked in the main by DO-GOODERS

Yes buddy - we are do gooders - you post a question under 'news' about draconian licencing laws that are in the process of being changed - then get upset because people disagree with you.

Oh and Well Done again on the name variation - what a clever girl you are.

No you can't see parallells between laws because I assume you are thick and probably drunk.

Sorry for typos - p!ssed - got to Asda on time!!
Question Author

Oneeydic.

Sorry if its wrong.

Yes I am mighty thick and very drunk. How clever.

In my drunken and inarticulate way - sorry you have to deal with heathens!

I posted this as a debate not a personal attack.Unfortunately some people only attack.

I love a good old fashioned debate - but latterly this has turned into a slagging match.

I did not come onto this for that but some juveniles see fit to spoil it and they have.I suspect the same ones who have endeavoured to spoil other threads.

ABEd - about time you did something - cos its going to pot

Yes, calling me dic & pric are very mature anda good way to an adult debate!

Buddy - I apologise for 'hijacking' your post and also apologise if you have felt I have insulted you in any way.

Maybe ED will edit the post and take away both our responses.

If you want a reasoned debate, then I am totally up for it, and maybe we dcan shake and start again.

Sorry for getting annoyed and my previous postings!

-x-

I, on the other hand, think my post was perfectly reasonable. If Buddy chooses to take it as a personal attack, then I guess that's up to her.

Mind you, it does reinforce my question - what is it about alcohol that gets people so riled up?

For the record, I am neither teetotal nor Christian (or any other religon). I just don't see that alcohol is a particularly important part of life. I certainly don't think that my enjoyment of life would be diminished if somehow the intoxicating nature of alcohol disappeared overnight.

Question Author

Thank you oneyedvic for your response.I am sure we shall continue to have open debates on issues without it being personal.

Le Marchand - Thank you for your reply also.Had you read all the responses you would find the issue of alcohol was not predominently the major issue - it was indeed the Licensing Laws in this country which I felt were draconian. Some people do not work 9-5.Some people work a back - shift and might want to pop into the supermarket or off license for a couple of cans. Now that is entirely their business and no-one elses. However if they finish their shift at 11pm they cant do this

It is not for us to advise others how to manage their time - the opportunity should be there for anyone to buy alcohol if everything else is available 24/7.That is my point - not peoples personal drinking habits.

I do hope I have clarified - yet again my stance on this.

Back to a reasoned debate.

There will always be exceptions, but rules should govern the majority of the population. I assume that the majority of people in this country do not work between the hours of 8am and 11 pm - the time you can currently buy alcohol in a supermarket.

Maybe it is also worth pointing out that sensible drinking of alcohol is not a problem. If people are sensible then I believe they can be organised enough to buy alcohol inside these times.

Its a bit like people who haven't got a cash card becasue tehy abuse the facility. All they can do is get the cash over the vcounter at their bank. Do you think their bank has a responsibility to be open 24/7 so that htey can get 'their' money whenever they want. These people can be organsied enough to get their money betwenn 9 and 5 Mon - Fri and posibly Saturday morning.

Alcohol costs this country an absolute fortune in terms of violence, policing, littering, criminal damage etc, not to mention the resources of the NHS. Personally, i think that if people aren't organised enough to buy their alcohol during a certain time, then I am afriad tough!

I am not a huge drinker (but am not tee total either) and am not religious, but I do get increasingly frustrated with alcohol problems on a Friday / saturday night.

Hopefully, that will clarify my reasonings against being able to buy a drink 24/7

Ciggies also cause problems to the Health Service but I digress and of course people are realistically only harming themselves, passive smokers and their families if they become ill. They dont cause people to act in a violent manner.

Where I live there are lots of people who work unsocial hours.Police ( although some have a special knock on the window of their local and can be found there enjoying a lock-in - been there),Factory workers ,Hospital Staff.

I just feel its a bit of a Nanny state not to allow people to make a reasoned choice because if the people who are alcohol dependant want booze they will get it by hook or by crook.

Sometimes its just a spur of the moment thing - like my husband working all day - charging straight from work to catch his flight in time - getting to the hire car firm before they close and then driving for 1hr before he came to the first shop.He only wanted to buy me a pressie - which he cant do whilst working.

There two sides to each story.
