I was just reading this and thought she is well placed for a Darwin Award.
The dangers of sticking ones head out of a moving train have been well know for decades, if not longer. There was a case not that long ago of someone being decapitated doing pretty much the same thing. And where I do sympathise and it was a stupid, senseless death we have to ask if people chose to do something stupid when there was industry approved safety notices up what more can be done?
It's a shame with health and safety that natural selection doesn't occur more. These people who really should't be a live because of their own incompetence then get a voice, and rights, and a vote.. when they're thick as ***.
TTT, some of the Edinburgh - London and Glasgow - London trains still have those scary doors, where you pull down the window to access the door handle.
An unfortunate accident indeed. However, regardless of signs or no signs, do not stick you head out of a moving train. ZM pointed out that the story says that the trees haven't been checked since 2009. Is it really logical to expect the authorities to check every tree along every mile along every single train route in the UK?
I approve of the improved warning. I hope that sign is larger and more prominent. Folk should be aware by now, but many won't have experience of trains and may assume everything is cleared well away from the side of a train. There will always be some that are vulnerable unless the warning is unmissable.
"Is it really logical to expect the authorities to check every tree along every mile along every single train route in the UK?"
With health and safety? Well it's a must is it not? ;)
I think, like with roads, if it doesn't hit the biggest train (lorry) then it's fine. And you know when it hits because you'll hear the twigs hitting the carriage

Yes. It's a safety issue.
"Do Not Lean Out Of Window Whilst Train Is Moving" to me doesn't give any impression that you can lean out of the window.
Maybe people need to know what the word caution actually means?
I agree.. i've no problem with making people more aware of do's and don'ts but i do feel this could have easily been avoided by simply just sitting in yer seat.
Remember the old carriages that had a leather strop attached to the windows to raise and lower them? There were brass ferrules in the strop to allow you to adjust the lowering of the window.
Must say i find it a tad ignorant that some of you appear to be treating the death of a young woman with such insensitivity. Yes, what she did was extremely careless, to put it mildly, but she is someone's daughter and, reading through the link provided, she hardly appears to be 'stupid' or 'well placed for a Darwin Award'.
