If they are Bulgarians (which I doubt) they have no need to be smuggled in, 'Bulgaria signed the European Union Treaty of Accession on 25 April 2005, and became a full member of the European Union on 1 January 2007. In addition, it has a tripartite economic and diplomatic collaboration with Romania and Greece, good ties with China and Vietnam and a historical relationship with Russia.'
If they were coming here to seek work, they would need to come in 'under the radar' no matter what agreements are in place.
It’s odd that the driver took them all the way from Holyhead to Essex knowing they were in his lorry.
On the other hand the fact they took such a convoluted route from SE Europe would suggest he knew very well what he was doing.
Either way, poor wretches, wherever they’re from.
Apparently this is not first time such a tragic discovery has been made, in 2000, 50 bodies were found dead in a containers,

Anyone remember reading about this, because I can't.
Is that the Chinese incident AOG, because if so I remember reading about it.

from the link

//It is the biggest disaster of its kind since 2000, when 58 Chinese stowaways died on a ferry from Belgium to Britain.

Today's tragedy has claimed more victims than the Manchester Arena bombing, in which 22 were killed.

In 2015, 71 migrants, including eight women and four children, were found dead in the back of a Slovakian meat lorry which was abandoned truck on an Austrian motorway. //
Rockrose and retrocop thanks for the info I was completely unaware of those incidents.

As the bloke is charged with murder are they saying they were deliberately gassed or something?
Not exactly but if you drive a lorry load of people around for 5 days and deprive them of air - are you not knowingly killing them?
-- answer removed --
It was a refrigerated lorry apparently. I suppose if the driver knew they were in there for five days with no air, food or water and didn't open it then that could be construed as murder. But we shouldn't make suppositions.

Unless they can prove an intention to kill or cause GBH then it is manslaughter.
why are people turning this into a brexit thread? Show some compassion please.
