yes me!
I watched the Commons urgent question
no - said the immigrant MP - nothing to do with immigration!
hem hem I thought
and then a bit later she DID think that criminal activity WAS a subject for the immigraiton police
I thought it was the Bulgarians limbering up and hoping to profit from the chaos that will clearly result from Brexit ...

I worked for a company that carried continental freight, import/export. Unless the driver was complicit in this, it is virtually impossible for a driver to be unaware that the trailer has been accessed illegally. It's also inconceiveable that the 39 people weren't aware of the risks of travelling inside a refrigerated, solid-sided trailer. I believe this type of vehicle would have a lower priority for checking by officials due to the nature of its' composition. That's not to say they aren't checked. Some are, and it's easy to know when they have been because they are re-sealed with a customs seal. This applies more to containers than trailers. Drivers always check the seal after every stop, and before resuming their journey. If they find anything wrong, they have to follow their relevant procedures.
As I re-call, the BBC news said the 39 people were not from Europe, although that hasn't been confirmed. There's a lot more about this that we are probably not aware of, so anything else is just speculation. And I would guess from some people who know nothing about the workings of continental freight.

The latest: //Police believe the vehicle travelled from Zeebrugge, Belgium, into Purfleet [near Grays where it was discovered] on the River Thames….. The National Crime Agency said it had sent officers to assist and identify any "organised crime groups who may have played a part"….. A spokesman for the Bulgarian foreign affairs ministry confirmed the truck was registered in the country.//

I'm prepared to hazard a guess that the victims are either Middle Eastern or African.

I see some immigration 'charities' have blamed this on the Government.
'Despite the investigation being at an early stage and it being unclear where the victims died, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants has already blamed the British government.
The charity's chief executive Satbir Singh said: 'Nobody should be in any doubt that the ultimate responsibility for these deaths lies with government policy which has deliberately closed down safe and legal routes into Britain.'
Personally, I think they need to look closer to home.

I don't see how the man from Northern Ireland who has been arrested can possibly be charged with murder. Murder is intentionally killing someone, and I very much doubt that is what he intended to do when in charge of this lorry. Surely what he was doing was - knowingly, or unknowingly - smuggling people into this country, and something went calamitously wrong.
