Danny, i'll answer your question, with a question.

Do you feel rule britania came from an era we should no longer represent? (the slave trade)
This country has achieved much since this song was first written. I note this waste of space is over here to make sure she gets her dibs.
If our acievements are not appreciated go back to her country of origin.
She trots out the same old same old slave trade carp. I don't suppose she is aware that His Royal Brittanic Navy operated a squadron of ships in the West African station that were there to stop slave ships and free the slaves they contained.
Brittania did rightly Rule the Waves. More stirring than her Kum ba yah carp.

Question Author
spath, would you prefer the sex pistols - god save the queen
anyone unfamilar with the lyrics can google them, should we ban hubert parry’s jerusalem as well..
" I note this waste of space is over here to make sure she gets her dibs."

Rude, and uneducated (a bit like ToraToraTora's answer)

The singer Lilly allen bought this online debate into act. Not the lady in the video, she simply spoke to Piers about it because she backs it.
//Between 1808 and 1860 the West Africa Squadron captured 1,600 slave ships and freed 150,000 Africans.[1] //
From link above
Fender, saying rule britania is dated isn't saying we should use the sex pistols to remember.
There has been rumblings and grumblings about the symbolism portrayed for years now.

What will it take for some to stop calling for a ban , get off their behind and compose something stirring that represents modern Britain.
Spath, asking a question is not an answer.I take it you don't know.
did Black people ever keep slaves!!
"Brittania did rightly Rule the Waves."

And do so no longer. At all. By any means.

Dated.
I love Jerusalem but i guess that too would be banned, sigh............
Never watched The Apprentice so i've just had a look at Wicki for the results of series 13 of that programme. When i clicked on her name, this is what it said; "aged 23, is a whiny, anti-British nonentity from Manchester. She was the series most successful candidate before being the first person to be fired during the interview stages, having advanced to the semi-finals and finished in 5th place." So why does anyone pay any heed whatsoever to whatever ramblings trip from her tongue?
As usual you jump in without reading what has been written before.
Did you not notice 'did rule the waves '? They 'did' rule the waves when they freed 150,000 slaves. I note you ignored that bit.
Emmy // did black people keep slaves// Yes:-

How come slavery has got into this? If everything from that era were banned there would be no Jane Austen etc. etc.. I think it seems to have been forgotten that Britain banned the slave trade before any other country (.W. Wilberforce) and then banned slavery itself.

Slavery has been going on since the year dot - the Romans enslaved the British (and any others they could find); Arabs travelled south in Africa to find slaves to sell and let it not be forgotten that the people who sold the Africans into slavery were African chiefs themselves.

It is still going on - in the news almost every week. I think my country can be proud of its history and certainly proud of its wonderful music.

Hmm.... got a bit carried away, sorry (I can hear the 'and so she should be' comments) but why should our culture be under such incessant attack? Trying to remember all the lyrics of 'Rule Britannia' and I can't think of a reference to slavery. The daft woman wants shutting in a room with a tape-loop of 'Land of Hope & Glory' and 'Rule Britannia' playing until she has read some decent History books.
Well written Jourdain. xxx
emmie: "did Black people ever keep slaves!! " - oh yes and most slave traders were black.
danny

that was me being ironic,
slavery got into it because the daft bat talked about it.
Sorry Emmie :-)
danny
no worries..
