Have terrorists like the IRA been 'rehabilitat ed' or have they just accepted the situation while continuiong their 'struggle' in less overt ways? People like Adams and the late not-lamented McGuiness will always be regarded as terrorists by me, as my mother used to say You can't polish a turd. Although naomi and I differ fundamentally (no pun intended) on our views about Islam, I am very much in agreement with her views on this one.
As I have said before several times on differing threads, I believe Islamic extremism speaks to the psyche of the terrorist, rather than to his belief system.
The twisted need to inflict pain and death based on a misplaced sense of religious and moral superiority is an issue of mental illness rather than religious ideology - and should be regarded, and treated as such, including protection for the public.

Emmie, They can’t be given the benefit of the doubt because their mindset is such that their whole lives are given over to their cause. The bloke who ran amok last week gave the impression that he’d mended his ways because lying to further Islam is permissible and that’s what they do … but he hadn’t - and we are now in no doubt of that.

I cannot speak from a position of any expertise, but I can't help but wonder how the need to maim and kill innocent people can be the actions of anyone who is sane.
The very need to carry imagined religious doctrine into such extreme and fatal actions separates the believer from the psychopath.
