//The PM was asked by a worker in a factory whether a Tory government would abolish TV licence fees for everybody, Boris Johnson said: "Well, I don't think at this late stage in the campaign I'm going to make an unfunded spending commitment like that, but what I certainly think is that the BBC should cough up and pay for the licences for the over-75s as they promised to do.

"But at this stage we are not planning to get rid of all TV licence fees, though I am certainly looking at it."

He added: "But you have to ask yourself whether that kind of approach to funding a TV, a media organisation still makes sense in the long-term given the way other organisations manage to fund themselves - that's all I will say.//

I think the suggestion may be to pay by subscription and/or have adverts. Neither really appeals.
should be scrapped, its out of date...wireless license
I think that's a fair comment
keep the 75 and over with free licences. If they scrap it entirely how will the BBC fund their out put.
From the government using general taxation ?
It's the sensible option.

Advertising I suppose Emmie, the same as every other television company.
The licence fee is very outdated now, with so much other choice available. Subscription would make more sense- it will survive anyway them- if it is worthwhile.
As long as the subscription is no more than the current licence fee I'll be happy.

It won't be though will it?

Soon you'll need an armful of subscribed services to view much as more go to other platforms.

Will have to wait and see.
i don't like the idea of advertising on the BBC. subscription perhaps, there is now Britbox which charges
5.99 a month i think for lots of old, new content
Mine's due at the end of December, do you think he'll scrap it by then ???
hereiam no chance
I know (haha).
I think the BBC is worth it but i think the age of scrapping it should be retirement age. Or at least means tested from retirement age.
Haha I was right then. See 9.20 Friday 6th.

Now what Boris has to do in order to shut up the hand wringers and marxist luvvies, is announce that the licence to watch tv is to be scrapped and the idle, agenda riddled, benefactors will need to do some serious work if they want to live high on the hog as they do now. However, he must say, the tv licence will be replaced with a National Health licence. A photo ID licence for all adults over the age of 18. This will cost £100 per year and all proceeds will go directly to the NHS to provide the service that we all want instead of to the Beep Beep See to provide a service that we don't want. This kills two birds with one stone ......the marxist Islington luvvie set and sorts out the problem of who is treated and who is entitled to treatment. All children accompanied by an adult with the correct documentation are treated free of charge.
he can by all means but only if the BBC is funded centrally not by adverts. I like the way the BBC is funded and operated even though they lean to the left.
it's an absolute bargain anyway.
It is indeed Tora. Actually Johnson didn’t say he “might scrap” the licence fee he said that the system needed looking at. Which isn’t unreasonable. The current BBC charter has several years to run and nothing is likely to happen to the licence fee until then.
I wish the Tories wouldn’t give the impression tho that they want to kick the BBC at every turn. It’s one of Britain’s successes.
He wasn't going to respond in a negative fashion 2 days before the Election now,was he?

It is an absolute bargain.
I wouldn't mourn the demise of the BBC.
