the first signs of contrition, yes, but blame still resting squarely with the media and Brexit. at least he didn't brand the electorate "thick, racist and bigoted" although i bet there are those in his circle that believe that.

Mr McDonnell said that he was sorry that Labour failed to articulate its message. He's wrong. They articulated it perfectly and that's why the electorate gave them a sound thrashing. It's still very worrying that more than 10 million people put their crosses next to the Labour candidate despite the most ridiculous and potentially damaging manifesto I have ever seen. And still the insults continue. Emily Thornberry apparently said to ex-Labour MP Caroline Flint “I’m glad my constituents aren’t as stupid as yours”. Ms Thornberry responded by calling the statement a "total and utter lie" and said it was "not something I would ever think". Regrettably she may have some difficulty persuading people about her thoughts. In 2014 she was forced to resign from Labour's front bench after criticising the sight of a terraced house with a white van parked in front and a St George's flag displayed from the widows:

Of course whether the 26,897 people who voted for Ms Thornberry in her Islington South and Finsbury constituency or the 19,609 voters who voted Conservative to oust Caroline Flint in Don Valley are the more stupid remains to be seen. I have my views on both these issues and they do not necessarily agree with Ms Thornberry's accounts.
