Should The Sydney Fireworks Go Ahead?

I understand that the money has been spend designing and supplying the fireworks in Sydney, but as a mark of respect and in support for the people affected by the bush fires, they should not let them off this time.

it's for Aussies to decide, really. They have bushfires most summers, these are just worse than usual.

It is a dilemma for them. I assume that the display brings money in (TV rights etc.), but it is also insensitive. They must decide - personally (have a cousin living outskirts of Sydney, who has had a fire about 3 miles from her house and is - at over 80, very distressed ) I'd call it off this year. It is not my decision, however, it's up to them.

Bless. The fireworks will trigger them........if they watch. From now on ban, say,,,,,,, Town square fountains. In case someone was once flooded. Ban kiddies windmills and those "dream catcher" bleedin chimes,,,,, in case someone was in a hurricane, and the Winter Olympics, in case some half wit has forgotten to bring a jumper......Meeehh.

As has been said, not my place to have an opinion. It may be too late to cancel them though and not just because they have been paid for. In the Disney Parks, for safety reasons, once a firework display has been set up, it must be fired and cannot be dismantled. It may be the same in Sydney.

Of course its for the Australians to decide; the Mayor of Sydney has made the decision in fact. I was just interested to know whether people were as surprised as I am about that decision.

Togo, its nothing to do with fireworks triggering anything, its to do with the insensitivity of the celebration under the circumstances, and also it creating even more smoke in Sydney.

If I was an Australian I wouldn't feel comfortable in cheering and applauding the firework display. I would be thinking of all the people made homeless by the bush fires. All the houses ,schools, towns that need rebuilding. Adding fuel to the fire comes to mind. All that extra smoke going into people's lungs . It wouldn't be the end of the world to cancel the display.

The new year's coming anyway, I see no connection with a fireworks display showing lack of respect. It won't change anything but is perhaps a symbol of new hope. Their decision of course.

If they want them, are they aren't going to start more fires, then they should go ahead and enjoy them. Cancelling isn't go to put any fires out, save any homes, or lives. Don't see have having them disrespects anyone, or cancelling them respects anyone.

It's true to say that across the World as the clocks chime and the bells ring out to welcome a New Year as many will be in mourning because of personal loss of some kind as others are looking forward with hope for a better time.

The World turns and life goes on.

I simply don't have a view about Australia's decision.

They won't recoup any money to use, it will likely cost them more to safely dismantle the thousands of fireworks already installed.
