Would they?

When Gary Lineker was a young upcoming footballer, he was a very nice man and a great player for England. Somewhere along the way, about the time he ditched his wife and four children, he lost his way and now TTT's description suits him perfectly. I wouldn't pay a TV license voluntarily, especially with the BBC paying him a fortune.

tv licence is already voluntary
Question Author
Really?
I thought it was compulsory to have one bednobs?
I'd probably pay it but most would not, GL's always been a flying buttress short of a cathedral.

I like that analogy 3Ts :0)
I wouldn’t volunteer the payment, that’s for sure
If it was a choice between receiving BBC channels or not I'd happily pay it.

I can't read the article...my adblock won't turn off.
He seems quite deranged.

I pay taxes, they can cover a national broadcasting company. I see no reason to volunteer more again.
Gary Lineker, not the sharpest knife in the block is he?
I wouldn't pay it voluntarily
I like Gary Lineker, but I’m not sure he’s thought this through.
Especially the bit about increasing it for those who volunteer to pay.
Seems a bit unfair.
I think he really means make it a subscription service.
Question Author
I think it would be a very small amount I’d subscribe to on there tbh
Yep, he hasn’t thought it through (and he admits it).

// I don’t know the logistics of how it would work. You would lose some people, but at the same time you’d up the price a bit. It’s the price of a cup of coffee a week at the moment. If you put it up you could help older people, or those that can’t afford it.” //

If the BBC went to a subscription/advertising model of funding, it would not raise a fraction of the licence fee, so services/channels would have to be cut.

I think it should be split into two licences (as it once was), one for TV & one for radio, I would gladly pay for a stand-alone radio licence.

You don’t need a licence to listen to radio. But you’d introduce one? Someone else who hasn’t thought it through.
What is daft about the current system really is that the fee is pursued by address not by person.
Which causes all sorts of issues and must cost thousands in wasted reminders etc.
I find it very annoying paying money to the BBC when I don't watch their programme's. It's a bit like paying money to Tesco so I can shop at Sainsbury's.
Taxes don’t really work like that vulcan.
People have to pay income tax pay for hospitals and nurses, but may not have used those in decades. We pay for welfare benefits, but may not have ever had any ourselves. We pay to build motorways, but maynot have a car, etc.
Yes we have a car and are charged heavily at every corner by every agency for using it and look at the state of our roads. No hard shoulders and pot holes.

Even if you never watch the BBC, the fact that it exists means that the others have to provide a quality service - especially when it comes to Information and Education.

bednobs can you explain why you think paying the TV licence is voluntary? Its like saying your road Tax is voluntary -if you don't pay it they fine you .

I think the whole TV licence thing is a huge disgrace. I don't care how many good programmes they produce, the commercial channels produce just as good if not better. It should be a subscription service like Netflix then if you want to watch it you pay for it, if not you don't . Netflix costs me around £9 per month and much better value than the £12 a month TV license
He didn't ditch his wife and 4 kids. They split up like millions of other people do.
