Being tried by his opponents and cleared by his allies isn't a good look. I'm not sure anyone, apart from maybe Mitt Romney, comes out of this looking good.
There's plenty of reason to think that Trump's main interest is Trump -- it's not a leftist thing to say so either. Back when Trump was not yet even the official nominee, some of the most visceral hatred about him, his character and so on, came from the right, the Republicans; people who now are in some cases his strongest advocates. Listen to what Lindsey Graham, etc, were saying in early 2016.
They soon shut up when they realised that the party faithful were enraptured by the wonderful oratorical skills of Donald "I'm good with words, I know the best words" Trump, but they said it and thought it nonetheless.
