I still can't see, gromit, how that combination with normal humans will ever work. No matter what the technology is (unless it literally is 100%), it is just never going to work with people. Gromit: "The company needs to be clear that the software is not for autonomous driving, but merely an aid for the human driver, not a replacement. " - they do already make that very clear but the world is full of eejits who ignore the warnings. May mate's boss has a tesla and he apparently drives along using his laptop etc, a crash waiting to happen.
We don't expect the public to do nothing whilst being responsible. We expect test drivers to concentrate during the test drive. And we expect the tech to be improved until (and beyond) the point it's as safe as a human driver, and then the public can use it without responsibility (unless they force an accident somehow, which ought not be possible), much as they would normally expect a taxi driver or chauffeur not to hold them, the passenger, responsible.
