I was under the impression that by having a car, one was also to enjoy driving one. In saying that I went for a drive yesterday and had to concentrate more on detecting potholes in advance. :0(

I believe that the easier they make it to drive a car, the more accidents there will be, because concentration lapses are more likely.

Looking back to the earlier days of motoring where not only did the driver have to steer (without any power assistance), control the power, and change gear (without the help of synchromesh), they had to continually adjust the air/fuel mixture, adjust the spark timing, etc. They couldn't afford to play games/chat/joke with such a plethora of tasks to carry out just to keep going.

Perhaps cars should follow the example of trains - isolate the driver from all passengers and give him a task to complete every so often or the vehicle will stop.

They should not be banned. One doesn't progress without testing. But the test drivers should be tested to ensure they have or exceed the minimum level of intelligence needed.

Well I do believe in having ones eye on the road, put constantly looking out for potholes is taking it a bit far. Considering that we've not had a bad winter for the last three/four years, hence very little spent by councils on gritting, you would think that money saved on gritting would have repaired some if not all holes. Wishful thinking I guess. :0(

Autopilot on Tesla vehicles is both safe and helpful on their cars, if used properly, so they should not be banned.
The company needs to be clear that the software is not for autonomous driving, but merely an aid for the human driver, not a replacement.
Autonomous driving is still a long way off, and in the meantime we should give full attention to our use of New technology in vehicles. But the problems are not Insurmountable, and driverless cars will eventually happen, and the roads will be safer without Tired, drunk, drugged drivers operating cars.

I still can't see, gromit, how that combination with normal humans will ever work.
No matter what the technology is (unless it literally is 100%), it is just never going to work with people. You can't give people nothing to do or be responsible for, while still expecting them to be alert at every moment. That just isn't how we work.
Surely, most people have been a passenger in a car... where they haven't had to be "in control" of it, and have drifted off in their mind at some point, because of that. If you think this is a good idea... try paying full attention every time you are a passenger im future, and see how much you really concentrate.
The worst thing is, these are the best statistics. Any of us, getting a "self-driving" car, would be really alert to begin with, naturally. But the longer drivers go without a problem, the less they will pay attention. People will get more and more blase, the longer it goes on. So, not impressed so far...
