We are a rich country, with a well funded health service.
What went wrong?

Just to explain: Now that the UK has the highest European number of deaths, it becomes necessary to explain how the UK's numbers are exaggeratedl y high and the foreign ones fiddled too low. Any number of suggestions on how this can be achieved have been put forward - take your pick, none of them are convincing. Those who died with Covid 19 pathogens in their body...

// Well, either ymb's implying mass immigration is a factor or he has no point at all.//
Jim you can model it ( NJ aaaaargh I have said this is major BS! smacks gavel convulsively)
Most of the passengers since they are alive are in the susceptible group of the SIR model and very few in the I group - infected and prepared to KILL good old John Bull !
And so with the very large indigenous group of people infecting each other in the I group - the added effect is piffle
unless the I group is on the wane and very small - in which case imports and the cases they add have a relatively large effect
Tests have shown 90% of ABers report being competely lost after the words " jim - you.... "

Although, then again, "what went wrong" is surely based on the original post, ie Covid-19 specifically rather than the NHS in general? My initial understanding was that your post was addressing two separate points, and even if this was wrong I don't think it was an unreasonable reading.
But, seriously, ymb: I've mentioned this before, but it's troubling that you still keep seeing malice where it's better to see incompetence. I make mistakes. I don't twist.

we shouldnt have a public inquiry because they dont work
that does mot mean no review or post mortem or wash-up discussion ( wash-ups is what doctors who cut up dead people like Dr Lee have apparently)
- but it does if you subscribe to NJs view that nothing that you do before can predict at all what will occur after
The work a day firemen demanded a review after Manchester arena, and Kerslake did a good one - muslim tax drivers took all the kids to the hozzie because the police failed to vertify the area was 'clear'. and were shocked to find the firemen did nothing because their senior officers sort of went on walk-about

Excellent, well thought-out response from Karl.
Every now and again someone actually engages their brain on AB rather than blowing steam and it's thoroughly refreshing.
Gromit - point of clarity...whilst the UK may have the highest number of deaths in absolute terms, we're 'only' fourth in deaths per million, which is perhaps a better comparison.
We're still behind Belgium, Spain and Italy.

From what I've read, some of the problems we've faced are down to the way the Government reacted and some were totally out of their hands.
There were delays in starting the tests and a delay to the start of the lockdown.
That was the fault of the Government.
However, it's easy to 'go all Piers Morgan' - a man who apparently eats hindsight on toast every morning.
The figures were skewed by people succumbing to the illness who had underlying health conditions; or smoked; or were obese; or who were elderly; or lived in cramped conditions; or who came from ethnic minority backgrounds.
The Government can't reasonably be held accountable for the demographics of who died.

Can we claim that the UK's response was faultless when we can see that other countries have had apparently better success in combating the virus's spread?
Nor is this question conditional on the UK being the only country, or one of a few, to have "screwed up" by this measure. There are clear questions to be asked for example about the response in, in no particular order, the USA, Brazil, China, Iran, and plenty of others. Just because almost everybody is making a mistake doesn't mean that the mistake was unavoidable.

whenever I read this on AB - I know when I read the post ( Karls in this case ) I will find a mish mash of wrong ssumptions and non sequiturs
and so boys and girls having set the scene
I stopped at - exaggeration of figures or cover up of high figures and WHY
malice need not be assumed or immediately looked for
as that British Army general ( and JIm ) said - in a good going cack up - never overlook the role of sheer incompetence
counting in different ways strikes me as an obvious one - all it takes is to assess how much the contribution
as fir Jims - "I have more confidence in public enquiries" - age like passage of 50y will teach you different. [I am trying to think of inquiries which were so bad they had to do them again] = Lord Mersey Titanic -1913 he cdnt understand figures like lat and longitude so er disregarded them. Not done again tho
after 60 answers - I think we can conclude that the group on AB dont have the slightest idea.
