Over The Peak?
Hi folks, the government inform us the UK is over the peak of the virus, I don't see it looking at the figures. How are they coming to this conclusion? I can see some sad losses down some days but shoot back up again the next, undoing them! TIA.

I still can't get my head round the fact that we are an Island. Historically that would keep us safe and snug from all ills and menaces yet we have the worst mortality rates in Europe. Our crime rate is not exactly enviable either. Who are doing things wrong when you consider the mortality rate from covid on the Islands of New Zealand and Australia in comparison to the UK?

That would be useful, woof. On most maps and figures our general E. Riding is the palest shade of pink and deaths minimal. We tend to be an elderly county anyway and any infection confined to 2 or 3 cities/towns. Our danger area is venturing to a supermarket in Scarborough environs.

NZ were certainly later and had less cases before they locked down. My brother has been locked in a house in Wongalura with only a few tinnies to sustain him ( sorry that is Oz, OK MongaTula then) since late March. Not allowed to see the grans children

I think UK, particularly London, is more of a hub than New Zealand and I think a lot of the cases came in from Italy in the early days and some from China. The government says they did put in measures to control incoming cases from some of these places at the time but clearly they were too little and/or too late. It also seems countries who locked down quickly generally have lower rates. We were behind Italy and Spain and with hindsight should have had advance warning and time to act earlier. Ideally at the end of February.
But it's easy to say this with hindsight of course. At the end of February there were less than 30 cases in UK and we'd had only one death. But I don't remember any posters on here or opposition politicians in late February/beginning of March calling for an immediate complete lockdown of all shops, public transport. It would have been a brave politician to impose a lockdown at a time .
I remember in mid March when Matt Hancock advised over 70s to stay at home for some time there were lots of phone calls to LBC from people claiming it was interfering with their liberty and unnecessary. Yes in early March there were some people calling for football matches and race meetings to be called off but not for full lockdowns, school closures, etc
Was anyone here or in the opposition demanding lockdown at the end of February? Maybe I just didn't notice.
