Let's be clear here: the pastor did nothing wrong at all. He defended his property, exercising his 2nd Amendment rights, called the police when he needed back-up -- and *he* was the one who ended up arrested, and then charged?
This is the sort of problem that can get lost when focusing on police brutality. There's something broken about a system where this can possibly be the result. Luckily the charges were dropped, and luckily no lives have been ruined, but it seems reasonable that it was a matter of luck rather than judgement. Imagine being told that *you* were the one to be arrested, imagine how easy it would be to lose your temper at the raging injustice, and imagine how easy it would be for a police officer to use your anger as justification for an aggressive response.

"Imagine being told that *you* were the one to be arrested" I dont have to, it has happened to me. Arrested and slung into a cell. full red faces and apologies in the morning when the 'boss' got in but still a night in the cell for me.

If the 'flytippers' were not apparently brandishing guns or hiding concealed weapons I see no reason for the pastor to 'brandish a gun' after drawing a concealed weapon. Trespass and Flytipping on private property.? Hardly a reason to pull a gun. After all who's life was he defending if there had been no initial threat to his own?
From the second link.
//Donny Salyers, 43, Dennis Salyers, 26, Farrah Salyers, 42, Christopher Sharp, 57, and Amanda Salyers, 26, are all facing charges for hate crimes and various degrees of assault. Both Donny and Dennis Salyers are also charged with assault and battery. Sharp and Amanda Salyers are also charged with trespassing.
"All persons are currently being held without bond. This is still an ongoing investigation," said Carter.
The family's arrest came after Carter met with McCray on June 3 to discuss the incident.
"It was apparent to me that the charge of brandishing was certainly not appropriate. Actually, as I told Mr. McCray, if I were faced with similar circumstances, I would have probably done the same thing," Carter said in a statement, referring to the pastor's pulling out his firearm in self-defense.//

Fair enough. If they threatened his life I can understand a pastor carrying a concealed weapon. Only in America does a man of the cloth put more faith in a firearm than his God. I was focusing, initially,I admit,on the fact they mentioned it to be a concealed weapon.
As Virginia is a '"shall issue state" as opposed to an unlimited issue or "may issue " state I was considering he had not fulfilled the criteria of a 'shall issue permit' to carry a concealed weapon.

And that is the crux of my point - that America is a society that not only thinks a Man Of God should be able to carry a gun, but gives him the legal permission to do so.
I find it difficult to imagine the mind set of a priest would do that.

So many injustices in the world. So many guilty avoiding punishment. White, black, brown, yellow it matters not.
Life’s vicissitude‘s can drive one insane. We all hope that it won’t happen to us, but, sometimes your in the wrong place at the wrong time. This poor guy illustrates it well.
In his case so far so good. But those hicks won’t forget.
He will need his concealed weapon and license.
Self defence and self reliance are his survival and his justice.

That doesn't work, OG. It's another one of those comforting lies we like to tell ourselves, that this problem is unique to the US, or at any rate isn't an issue here. It clearly is not.
ymb's experience is clearly not racially motivated but still exposes an issue of its own, namely abuse of authority -- and that's an issue that is sadly not confined to one country, nor perhaps will ever be; but even going beyond that it is not difficult to find examples of institutional racism in the UK. Whether or not they are rarer here is less important than acknowledging that they do exist and that there is still work to be done.

Mozz - // /But I come back to my original point - how does a pastor come to be carrying a gun in the first place?//
It may be the fact that a group of people were dumping a freezer on his property and he felt safer armed than he did unarmed and outnumbered. This is America. Everyone owns a firearm. //
First of all, you can't say that 'he felt safer armed … ' because the pastor could not have known that the incident was going to take place, so clearly he carries a concealed weapon as a matter of course, and simply produced it at the time.
And second of all, that does not address my point - what is a priest doing owning a gun, much less carrying it concealed about his person, and obviously being prepared to use it.
Buying a gun and getting a concealed carry permit are not instantaneous reactions to a situation, they require a good deal of forward planning, which, from a priest, I find deeply disturbing.

Well, he could easily have seen the people from his house, and grabbed the weapon as a security befpre going to face them.

We have no idea of he was prepared to use it or not, he could easily have used the gun in order to frighten off the group.
As for why he owns one? Open your eyes to what is happening in America Andy. He'd be foolish to not have a weapon right now. He maybe a pastor, but he's a black man first, and if racists see him, his religion will not be the first thing they see, will it?
