// Will I have to cancel the choice of hymn for my funeral//

We had a couple of verses of Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory at my husband's funeral, he would have haunted us forever had we not.
What complete and utter rubbish! It's like not enjoying Wagner because Hitler liked it. Music transcends politics.

I've sung 'Going Home' in a choir, retrocop, it's a wonderful choice for a funeral. Let me know and I'll warble it for you, if I'm still above ground.

About a week before lockdown we (all 7 of us in The Harmonics) sang 'Swing Low' in S.A.T.B. harmony as part of our programme in a charity concert - and helped to raise £600 for a medical charity in Yorkshire. Spirituals are a basic part of most choirs' programmes. I've sung them for years (some lovely alto parts because, possibly, African voices tend to be lower - I don't know about that and I'm not being racist, but it remains a fact that the alto lines are lovely).

Whoever started this particular hare is out for trouble, with a capital TROUB! We shall sing what we like.... now for a rousing chorus of 'The Sun has got his hat on...' (very good for practising aspirants)!
I would be amazed if anything came from this but it's nothing to get worked up about either. By definition, re-examining our culture and its historical context is going to turn up loads of things to look at, some of which will lead to changes, others will not. The idea that asking the question itself is an attack is surprising. I thought getting worked up over questions was part of the fabled "snowflake" culture.
that's the end of the Cornish Fishermen singers too, most of their shanties being Afro-Caribbean based - and, oh horrors, Ozzies as well.

There's one statue down here that most of us in the Southwest would be happy to see pulled down - and discriminatory that it is as it doesn't represent male birthing...... here we are, a Damien special and it's ghastly.
I can agree with you on that DCT. Ghastly.
There was thread on AB two or three years ago where a professor of one of those stupid made-up subjects (such as gender equality in field mice studies) where she was quoted as saying the England fans had ‘misappropriated’ the song.

If I could be arsed I’d post the link I would...but I can’t be arsed.

It was total stupidity then, and this is total stupidity now.

And yet some cultures we can't question because that would be racist.
DTC, wow I don't envy the locals having to look at that! What a monstrosity!
And the All Blacks will be changing their kit, apologising, and sending a few millions to 'black folk only' charities.
If we have to ban everything related to the slave trade we have to ban an awful lot of stuff.
I posted this on another thread but at George Floyds funeral they sang Amazing grace which was written by a slaver.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Grace

\\He deserted the navy to visit Mary "Polly" Catlett, a family friend with whom he had fallen in love.[8] After enduring humiliation for deserting,[a] he was traded as crew to a slave ship.

He began a career in slave trading.[b]//
