Windrush Compensation

Yes there has been alot said about this and i think due to what happened in America and the George Floyd incident things seem to have been brought up again, yet there hasnt been any figures as to what compensation is going to be paid to each person. So has anyone heard any amounts mentioned? Compensation payments take years, the far east prisoners of war who were held under the japanese had to wait until 2001/2 for theirs and was not what i would call substantional considering the suffering and subsoquent years of horror they endured. What are your views?

I was listening to this this morning and to the dreadful treatment some people had received from our own Government with deports papers despite being here since the 50s, I think to date £350,000 has been paid out to a few but they appear to be dragging their feet on the majority of cases which is shameful

Here if you want to do the maths.I don't think everyone gets the same amount though.

Reading through my link there are a number of things that they can claim for, so i suppose that the amounts will vary dependent on what is claimed for.

Wondering how they calculate a sum. After all, both sides had the responsibility to hold proof as to who was and wasn't here legitimately. It seems both sides didn't bother to either obtain or retain the relevant documentation.

OG I think a lot of the Windrush folk enquired about documentation and were told they didn't need it....that the government held records would suffice.

Oh yes, it's a complicated procedure and can't/shouldn't be rushed.

foolish of who OG? I am in the middle of applying for a passport having been without one for many years. It has been complicated for quite a few reasons including Covid and I have had many conversations with helpful Passport office staff. Several times I have asked them for documentary (email) confirmation of something that I have been told and have been told that there is no need because its on their record and no they can't send me the proof I am asking for....so far and touching wood, its been ok....but if you ask a government department for proof of something and they refuse to give it and say that you don't need it and its a verbal interaction, then short of recording every phone call, I am not sure what can be done or what the Windrush folk could have done.

Interesting views but does anyone actually think they should get more than the far east prisoners of war did? I know how much they got from experience but just asking for peoples opinions please. Oh and by the way why has VJ day not even had a mention yet either on tv or the media. Are they sticking to the phrase that they are often referred to as the forgotten?

We don't know how much any one individual will get, it's a sliding scale and many will be below the figure that the Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) were awarded.

I personally think theycare going to get more. Ive just watched my local news and apparently today is Windrush day and still no mention of VJ day bearing in mind VE day was being mentioned months in advance.

Dad was a POW with the Japanese for over three years, was on the infamous Burma railway, beaten and starved, weighed five and a half stone by war end.
Under Tony Blair government, was awarded £10,000 which he gave to us three kids.
I loved Dad so much, thinking of him, and the scars on his back, as well as the mental scars brings a tear to my eye always.

The couple wrongfully arrested over the closure of the airport by drones, received £200,000.

Windrush? I honestly don't know, but I suspect the taxpayer will get thoroughly milked.

Foolish of all concerned who made such decisions of course.

Yeah Danny, but that starts from the premise that the government and thus ultimately all of us since it's our money, are totally responsible. Until now it's not been clear that we might be. Certainly all involved should have sought evidence/proof of citizenship, for their own protection.
