much debate in the media about schools and their reopening over the last few days - with the government suggesting children are not super spreaders, countered by Neil Ferguson saying that they are. and along with suggestions by the Association of Schools and College Leaders that children could only attend on a rota basis, is the NEU's 200 point checklist to be satisfied before schools should reopen.

no link - google "schools" in the news tab and then read it in the media that supports your point of view. but the NEU list is not a right-wing media invention, it does exist, here - https://neu.org.uk/media/11476/view

what chance of the list being satisfied before opening day, or compromises being reached? or will the schools remain closed, or partly closed?

"The Government need to communicate that it safe for children to return to school."

Are your ears painted on? You cant turn on the tv or opena paper without this being said.

Now I agree that the handling of all this has been appauling but that statement is simply not true.
I am onboard with what Ich has said.
A school that I know well worked on a very detailed plan and risk assessment with Unions and the Local Authority prior to the current break so that all children can attend in September. The staff want the children back in school and would not put themselves and the children at risk if they thought it couldn’t be managed.

The Government are saying it wants schools to reopen, but they not demonstrating/proving that it is safe to do so. Cases are rising again, now back to over 1000+ daily.
In May when we had 1000+ daily cases the schools were shut on safety grounds. Now we have the exact same figures, and they want to reopen.
^ That should have been June, not May. The cases were much higher in Maythan now.
I thought the figures showed that cases were levelling out after a gradual rise, and despite local “spikes”.
Simply reacting to a single statistic (number of cases) is not helpful.
I don’t care for this government, but how can they “prove” one thing or the other on anything like this. Even scientists don’t agree.
Aye, but the chancellor wasn't scrabbling down the back of the settee for pound coins back then, Gromit.

They've painted themselves into a corner and are just going to have to put up with a bit of mess to get out.
Re the government allegedly not reassuring people, here’s episode 9 million of a long series :-)

I fully expect the majority of schools to re-open their doors in September. I also expect to see many (if not most) of them staggering the hours of education allotted to each 'year' in order to make the best use of the size of the building in which each school is housed. There will no doubt be some parents who (despite what the Government say) will be worried about sending their kids back immediately. If their concerns are genuine - a member of the household in very poor health, say - the first course of action should not be to fine these parents but to give them assurances that the return to school is both safe and absolutely necessary.
Gromit:
If you were Boris would you want the schools to open in September?
If so, what words could he say that would satisfy those unions who are against it, those parents and teachers who are nervous?
"Cases are rising again, now back to over 1000+ daily."

More testing and tracing, more cases. And you know that stop twisting stats to prove your nonsense.

" but they not demonstrating/proving that it is safe to do so."

From what I read they have, perhaps open today's paper instead of MArch's. There is now data available from other countries around how children spread/catch it.

Stopping kids from going to school which you seem to be advocating is a disgrace. It will also create even bigger divisions between the Disadvantaged kids and advantaged one. But then, given many of your posts, that probably you agenda so you can should how bad the Government are for making the poor have a bad education.
I'll rephrase that- if the decision was yours, would you open schools in September?
Johnson tried to insist schools would reopen on 1st June, but parents weren’t convinced and it didn’t happen.

Not sure much has changed since then. Where I live children are not allowed their grandma visit their home. Funerals must not have more than 30 mourners, but they want 30+ children to go and sit in a classroom.
As I said earlier, none of it makes sense.
Okay. I conclude you don't know whether you think schools should reopen but you will have ago at the government anyway, Gromit
"...have a go... "

// Government advisers have warned the nation may have reached the limit of what can be reopened in society safely.
But Mr Williamson suggested an upcoming study would support the government's position on reopening schools. //

Yep, that is not at all contradictory. A study that is not out yet isn’t proof of anything. Another mixed message unfortunately.
I think the schools up here open tomorrow with full return by 18th august
How long would you like schools to remain closed?
“ Funerals must not have more than 30 mourners, but they want 30+ children to go and sit in a classroom. ”

Utterly specious, with respect.
A class typically contains 30 kids max. In fact there had been much talk of reducing or staggering the classes.
So you might just as well say that it’s wrong to allow 30 to attend a funeral and yet stop the other :-)
Just think what the typical profile age wise of the attendees are at funerals compared to school ckassrooms.
And do people avoid touching at funerals? No they don't. Schools have worked for months to draw up risk assessments and plans - bubbles, one way systems, desks separated. Maybe if churches/funeral providers did the same the 30 figure could be relaxed
