We are always being told by the anti British and LibFac hordes that UK is the lowest of the low and heaven lies across the channel. Why then do thousands risk death to get to this "terrible" country. Surely they should apply for asylum in the utopia they are already in. France ain't too bad is it?

The vast majority of the channel crossers are exploited by people traffickers. The way to deal with this difficult issue is to work with France and other countries to smash these criminal gangs.

I believe it was the mayor/ess of Calais, some years back, stated that it was all our fault we are a magnet to the swamp dwellers at Calais. It was suggested our benefits were too attractive. I think that is common knowledge. //
'swamp dwellers' How callous.
And the 'Mayor of Calais', is or was mistaken, to put it politely, if they ever said such a thing. Do please try and base your comments on fact.
France itself and several other EU countries are more generous than the UK in their support for asylum seekers.

These people seem to be organising the benefits for 'asylum seekers'

I see an attempt by teacake to invoke cancel culture on TTT. If TTT wants to raise posts then what is wrong with that. Instead of your usual attack (on many posters) why dont you try being constructive? If you really dont like the thread then ignore it like other ABers do if they dont wish to keep commenting.

Natacha Bouchart, then mayor of Calais, did indeed say such a thing - to a gathering of MPs, no less.

The original comment was based on fact. She did say it:

Perhaps you are the one who should be careful of posing rubbish. It's easy enough to Google before just lobbing false accusations overe the fence to denigrate other ABers?

We've had this discussion here many times. As I understand it whilst other countries may provide more generous hand-outs, UK regulations offer easier and quicker access to benefits. If people are better off in France they wouldn't make all the effort they do to get here. That would be self-defeating.

Thanks mushroom25. It looks like the Mayor was saying that the 'perception' was that the UK was generous. In the same article, though the figures are from 2010, this perception was confounded:
'The benefits that EU migrants can claim in another EU country vary across the 28-nation bloc but certain basic rules are enshrined in EU law.
The UK does not rank highest in terms of total spending on social security per inhabitant.
According to the EU statistics agency Eurostat, the UK spent nearly £6,660 (8,000 euros) in 2010, with France, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands all spending more than 9,000 euros.'
And we haven't become 'more' generous since then.

sadly the immigrants must have missed that statistic as they sat in their offices weighing up their options and finished up in Blighty

// As I said, as I understand it we are not more generous - just more obliging by offering faster and easier access. //
in a way the UK is more generous, in that officialdom tolerates dealing with incomers in their own language, and provides translation facilities free at point of use for those who have no English. France, and possibly a good few other EU administrations, require translators to be paid for by the user.

Oh come off it PP “ what I fear is a whole load of Beirutis coming over and saying we dont want to stay and rebuild our homeland we have made such a mess of “ -
Never happens!
As in the 1930s, it’s usually a tiny percentage of the population of a country that are so desperate that they up sticks and run - most, even the most downtrodden, stay, with their fingers crossed.

An additional problem though is that some (no idea how many because stats are cagey on the matter) are not refugees but economic migrants. Why should they be 'fast tracked' into the UK when others follow the rules to come here. It's not fair, that is why they should be returned immediately the asylum is turned down.

Before sounding off at other ABers and dismissing their posts please try a little research first.
Scroll down the photos to the bicycle with tents in the background.
These photos by any standards depict a swamp.I could describe it as a quagmire but you ,in your continuance of foolish put downs, would probably not understand. Perhaps if I referred to the inhabitants of the camp as 'jungle dwellers' you would make some foolish comment about that also.
I base my comments on the facts that speak for themselves. Those photos depict swamp conditions.!!!
