The British Museum has removed a bust of its founder from prominent display, citing a move to acknowledge the museum’s historical relationship with slavery. Sir Hans Sloane funded his collection of artefacts, books and curiosities with profits from his wife’s sugar plantation. Shortly before his death in 1753, he bequeathed many of his belongings to the nation, and 71,000 of them formed much of what would stock the British Museum.

The museum’s director says, “We must not hide anything” but that’s exactly what they are doing. Hopefully in years to come no one will ask who founded and financed all the wonderful institutions that are now bowing to the Woke because at this rate the answers will have been forgotten.

What next? The renaming of Sloane Square?

So his wife's family was a slave owner. So what? He also did a great deal of good. I most certainly do not approve of slavery, but on the basis that everyone is tainted you would have to get rid of almost everyone in any position in the last 200 years. Er - George Washington anyone? It's History - get over it, leave it all as it and think whatever you want to think - then...

You're welcome, Jourdain. Plain common sense so very worthy.
//When we speak in general discussion of 'slavery' it is understood that we talk about the sugar planation slaves and the trade around the nineteenth century//

If people 'understand' that, Andy, it's only because they've been conditioned to.
It's not fair to accuse Allen of derailing threads. He passionately believes the nonsense he comes out with and can't understand why we can't all see it too.
Embarrassingly, I used to be just the same when I was 12yrs old and knew everything.
Theland - // You have a problem with that? //

I don't have a problem with any people of other nationalities, or other religions, or any religion - i leave that sort of nonsense to you, and you come on here with it on a daily basis.

You're the one with the problem with 'BAME' people - and you have one such person close to home, so as I said, check out the agenda with her. The only qualification needed to qualify as 'BAME' for you is to be non-white, and your D-I-L qualifies, so as I say, don't pretend to be selective, they're all the same, aren't they.

Spicerack, //I used to be just the same when I was 12yrs old and knew everything.//

Funny you should say that. It's exactly what I thought the other day when he said something about objecting to war.
I typed my surname into that web site and found a couple of slaves by the same name, but no slave owners.
I own Mrs T. Does that count?
Spicerack - // It's not fair to accuse Allen of derailing threads. He passionately believes the nonsense he comes out with and can't understand why we can't all see it too. //

I haven't accused Allen of anything.

I have however picked up Roy's obsession with nit-picking anything I post - because he does it all the time, and it's tedious.
It isn't nonsense though. When you type something that has holes in it I have every right to nit-pick.

Spicerack is right btw.
allenlondon, //But as most around here don't hang their heads, or even want to know how rich this country became as a result of the trade in human beings, or the payout when finally it was abolished, I doubt it'll happen.// all of us owe them, err there dead and long gone, we owe nothing to anyone, what is it, sins of the father mmm, my ancestors were farmers..far as i could trace, also britain did not make a mint on slavery, did it ever occur to you, what else the uk was capable of, shipping business inventions and patents, let's start with trains..as an example, you make it sound like all brits had whips and slaves...more like 1%, but were all collectively guilty, im not.
Learn from history. To learn from history, you have to STUDY history.

It’s not an obsession; just part of a desire to learn from the past, so as not to repeat it.

You hang on to your sanctimoniousness if you like.
roy - // It isn't nonsense though. When you type something that has holes in it I have every right to nit-pick. //

I refer you back to my post at 17:09.

Let's drop it now shall we.

I think the majority of posters on this site make it clear that they have learned from history.

For some unknown reason, you appear to think that learning from history is something you alone have achieved.

That would be inaccurate.

Allen, I don't see anyone here being sanctimonious except you. You're the only one crying 'shame' to other members.
So they've moved a bust of someone we'd never heard of from one place to another. Fair enough.

So you want to repeat something that is offensive and me to shut up about it and accept it?

Typical 'do you know who I am' from you.

//When we speak in general discussion of 'slavery' it is understood that we talk about the sugar planation slaves and the trade around the nineteenth century//

Why have you decided that what people think when the word slavery is mentioned...have you run a poll?

BTW
What is a sugar planation? (my inability to understand plain English kicking in)

It always descends into ad hominem, it seems.

However:

I have much to learn.

We ALL have much to learn.
