// He can do what he likes. // no he can't. https://www.fia.com/regulation/category/110 the FIA could pull his licence if it thought it necessary.

People are rarely even-handed. If they agree with what’s being said, they’ll support it. If they don’t they’ll object. Personally, I don’t believe politics of any description has a place in sport.

//what do [eople think of sports men and women wearing poppies? That could be viewed as a "political" statement, but I guess that's ok//

I don’t believe that is a political statement. It’s a respectful gesture of remembrance.
Actually, I think Hamilton and even Naomi Osaka with her face masks are doing a good job in raising awareness in the injustices black people have suffered. We need more action !!!!
I personally don't believe that wearing poppies is a political statement, but clearly FiFa did. What I am saying is that what constitutes a "political statement" appears to be individual. so if you (TTT) wants to ban political statements, he'll have to ban poppies too
FIFA have had a history of ridiculous decisions. The poppy one was just the latest in a stream of incompetence from them. I'm sure if the FA slip a few million into the pocket of the director of FIFA, they could've worn anything they wanted.

Funny, no poppies, but rainbow bootlaces were fine (I have no issue with either personally)
No,

sharon: "Ttt I am sure if you felt strongly about something, you would do something about it. Even in the workplace, maybe fire up a few colleagues, put a poster up on the notice board etc. " - well yes if I wanted to get fired!
///..As for his motivations...like most other 'celebrities' it's to get publicity and endear themselves to certain factions of the public...//

I doubt he was trying to endear himself to certain factions of the public

sports people rightly complain when politics gets involved in sport, remember the 1980 Olympics? So they should return the favour by staying out of politics.

Politics has no place in sport.

As pointed out where is the line to be drawn? So far better to say NO politics, whatever your cause.

I think Hamilton probably has crossed the line on this one. F1 needs to be careful it already has the green lobby on its back if it looses fans the sponsors will desert like rats of a shining ship.
TTT - I thought you weren't going to watch Hamilton anymore ?

Anyway good race .
Bottas has the same machinery - he really needs to step up to the plate
When did politics ever not have a place in sport, though? Politics has its place in more or less everything, for good or ill, and sport is no exception.
Did you mean sinking?
Anyway Hamilton is a hypocrite, he should be asking his employer how the Nazis helped German companies Bosch, Mercedes, Deutsche Bank and VW get VERY rich using 300,000 from concentration camps.

Hoppy to take the money from them and them and then live in a tax haven.
but it's not a leap of logic ttt - FiFa fined the England team for wearing poppies as a "political statement" in 2016. That's what i'm saying - "political statements" that one agrees with (like poppies) are ok, but political statements that one does not agree with are not.
Personally I take about as much notice of Hamilton's statement as I do of (for example) Bono, or lilly allen when they start spouting about stuff (ie zero)
"When did politics ever not have a place in sport"

My opinion is that it should not. Just because it is does not make it right.
Yes JD. Looks like the spell checker strikes again!

bazille: "TTT - I thought you weren't going to watch Hamilton anymore ? " - where have I said that? Anyway I was watching the race not Hamliton.
