Freedom to join their peers doing risky things away from parental control. It's natural enough, but some risk more than others. For some it comes with an awful penalty.
“what makes these young people dabble with dangerous drugs”

For the same reason others smoke, drink excessively, drive fast, not wear masks. The thrill, possibly an element of stupidity, or lack of self control. For some it’s a temporary kick, for others a permanent tragedy.
The perceived invincibility of youth - harm and tragedy are for others.
It's the "it won't happen to me" attitude.
Ecstasy isn’t considered a dangerous drug. It is not usually life threatening, and 4 deaths in one city indicate it was contaminated.

People take recreational drugs like they take recreational alcohol, for the thrill.

// Hospital admissions for alcohol poisoning of young people under 18 in the 3 year period 2016/17-2018/19 were 11,233. The admission rate for girls was 37.5 (per 100,000) compared to 25.9 (per 100,000) for boys. //

Is ecstasy MDMA ?
^ Yes.
are those US figures sunk?
// The number of people that die from ecstasy use is low compared to drugs such as heroin, cocaine, alcohol and tranquillisers. Nonetheless, a number of people in the UK do die from deaths related to ecstasy or ecstasy-type drugs every year. //

// Among these other adulterating chemicals that may be found in pills or powders sold as ecstasy, PMA is notable for its high toxicity and links with many fatalities. //

// Ecstasy-related deaths have always received a substantial level of media coverage, and proportionately much more than many other drugs. One study of drug-related deaths in Scotland in the 1990s found that every single death where ecstasy was implicated was reported in the press, whereas deaths related to other drugs were much less likely to be reported //
"For the same reason others smoke, drink excessively, drive fast, not wear masks."

What absolute twaddle.

People take drugs for the same reason they dont wear a mask. For gawds sake what planet are you on? You really think people not wearing masks are all after a thrill?

Well said ymb, I thought to myself when I read it 'what a bloody stupid comment'!!

I think that on reflection, Trevor will realise that he scored the proverbial 'two out of three' with his post - no-one wears a mask for pleasure, which is what links the rest of the activities he pointed out.
'no-one wears a mask for pleasure'

You should do a bit of googling on that one folks. Or maybe not.
Incorrect, refer to my post.

But if you don't understand it that's fine by me.
13;11, so you are an American in UK, thanks, we have very few of those on this site.
it is odd about the press reports, Sunk. My take on it is that MDMA is much more common than most other drugs except perhaps weed (which doesn't have a high death toll) and so newspaper editors imagine all their readers are either taking it themselves or have kids who are. Reports of heroin deaths won't stir up their readers at all.
I agree entirely with Trevor but think that anyone who experiments with drugs, no matter what kind, demonstrate a degree of stupidity bordering on recklessness. I have no sympathy for the person but I have for their family and friends.
jno
My take on it is that newspaper editors tend to be old people who enjoy wagging their finger at foolish young people, before going to the pub and getting completely blotto.
