Don't know what happened there, sorry. I will buy a local paper tomorrow for current situation. I completely agree with NJ's point about the language use and (by the way) I love the McGonegall poem - it is always a point of reference.

It seems to be a very broad brush-stroke and therefore open to criticism. E.G. N. Yorks. (not us) is High, despite there being very high numbers of cases in York and very few in the rest of the county area. More sensible to class York as very high and the rest as average - after all York has a clearly defined area in which it collects rates etc., nothing to do with the rest of N. Yorks..

I can’t help but think this was really badly done.

It was trailed all weekend as a big announcement on Monday. Lots of people were worried that their area would get more stringent rules, that pubs would shut, that full lockdown was back in many areas.

But it was just a labelling exercise. Everything stayed the same for everyone, we now have a shiny Tier 2 sticker (or 1 or 3).

They induced a lot of anxiety, unnecessarily in my opinion.

There wasn’t really any likelihood that there would be any “nasty surprises”.
It’s obvious for one thing that there’s no consensus in cabinet, Parliament, or between local
And national government about what to do. This was a labelling exercise first and foremost.

Its just a starting point tho Sunk and it dosn't apply to Wales anyway or Scotland, only England at the moment. Its an easyer system to follow, a think thats the idea. Peopel can see that there area may be moved from High to Very High and can see what that mean's if things get worse or after discussions with councils that were resisting being put to Very High. Am hoping tho that some get moved down from High to medium .

I’m not against it but I don’t see how it is any simpler.
They’ve just put different labels on things which can change.
When it comes down to it, it’s impossible to make this simple. The only “simple” is drastic or draconian; the original “shut everything down indefinitely and stay at home or else”

Thanks Danny. Very useful. I was unsure about the rule of six and how many households could meet. I was a bit concerned about Christmas and if the police would come barging in to count the people and demand proof of address.

Green changes to Tier 1
Amber changes to Tier 2
Red changes to Tier 3.

That could have been done with a press release last week. Instead we had days of build up and speculation. A live broadcast by PM, Chancellor and CMO to tell us all that we had changed from a colour to a number.

We (Burnley) have been placed in Tier 2 but, according to my local rag, this could soon be raised to Tier 3. From what i can glean from the report, the leaders of the County Council were holding out for a clear definition of the restrictions which they had not yet received, even as late as Monday morning.

"The subsequent statement placing Lancashire into Tier 2 seemed to suggest that any government desire for a tougher lockdown in Lancashire had been abandoned - at least for the moment."
"Yet some council leaders were under the impression late on Monday that talks were expected to continue in the coming days - meaning that moment could yet be brief."
Watch this space, as they say.
