Telt is a dialect variation of the past tense of tell. It is in the dictionary but should not be used in writing.

and I imagine that the jury considered possession of an offensive weapon and said to themselves - "nope definitely defensive - acquit"

A guy near where I lived just a few years ago, someone broke into his flat and attacked him, the guy fought back with a large kitchen knife and killed him after stabbing him nine times, most of the stabbings were in his back as he chased him out of his flat and into the garden. He still got away with self defence, even though the fatal stab wounds were administered while the lad was running away! I thought he would have gone to prison for sure!! He claimed self defence. Mitigating circumstances got him off the hook!

I think he would have been dead.
And if not dead now in prison for carrying a knife.

If Mr Singh took a knife of one of the attackers and killed them fair play but if he drew the knife from his person then the whole it's a 'religious' requirement bullcrap needs reviewing.
