Personally, If it's going on the TV as a serious program, I would rather a white man play Buzz Aldrin A black man play Muhammad Ali A white woman play Margret Thatcher A black woman play Florence Griffith Joyner A white man play Hitler A black man play Idi Amin etc. Theatres or local plays, ok...but not TV or films that are supposedly based on fact. I do realise that...

‘ Anne Boleyn was mysterious and captivating and I think a black female could play this role very well.’

Bit of a strange thing to say. What attributes would a black actor have which would make them play the roll very well?
Zacs - // What attributes would a black actor have which would make them play the roll very well? //

Playing against type would be a start.
What’s ‘type’ for a black actor?
Being a woman is one thing, of course. Being of an oppressed sector of society (ok, being a woman).

Having to be careful what you say, and do, and who yourfriends are.

I think the essentials of playing Anne Boleyn are just being a woman.

Being black merely acentuates the potential fellow-feeling.
‘ Being black merely acentuates the potential fellow-feeling.’

How?
Zacs - // What’s ‘type’ for a black actor? //

In this case, the role of a historical figure who was white, and hitherto, played by white actresses.
Eh? That doesn’t make sense, Andy. You said a black woman would be good at the role because they’d be playing ‘against type’. Being white isn’t a ‘type’ it’s a skin colour.

OK, take out the word 'type' and insert the word 'norm' - does that work better?
Well, it’s less potentially racist.
Zacs - // Well, it’s less potentially racist. //

Leaving aside the breathtaking offence of that observation - how is something 'potentially racist'?

Since you are the one with the semantic chip on your shoulder - you should know that racism is an absolute, something is either racist or it is not, there is no 'potential' involved, and certainly not by anything I have said in this thread, or indeed any other thread on this site, ever.
Zac......can I tell you a story?

In the 50's the hospital had a rugby tour of Devon and Cornwall, playing all the top clubs. On the beach one day we came across a piece of driftwood which was slightly anthropomorphic and one of our team a gorilla of a bloke from South Africa picked it up and in the coach co ing back hitched a plan. We painted it ,named it MADONNA WITH CHILD and sent a picture to the newspaper and received rapturous reviews. However, the Dean made us come clean and reveal all.

What is my point?
You either have or have not an artistic attitude to life, seeing, feeling, appreciating and identifying emotions and conclusions that others tend not to perceive.
It would seem that you and I among many others do not have that cognitive gift.
//Leaving aside the breathtaking offence of that observation - how is something 'potentially racist"?//

Something could have the potential to be racist to someone with different sensibilities than you. Something can be said without malice, but can still be found offensive by someone else.

//you should know that racism is an absolute, something is either racist or it is not, there is no 'potential' involved, and certainly not by anything I have said in this thread, or indeed any other thread on this site, ever.//

Poppycock. Racism (or any other "ism") is subjective. Does a phrase have to be intentionally racist to be actually racist? Who decides if something is offensive or not? As I said, one person's ism is another persons joke.
Mozz, I am not interested in the 'different sensibilities' of someone else. Zacs and I are exchanging posts personally, so his inference is not general, it is specifically aimed at me personally and I find it offensive.

We can discuss non-specific attitudes at another time.
Zacs //Bit of a strange thing to say. What attributes would a black actor have which would make them play the roll very well?//

Anne Boleyn was a very 'modern' women of the time. She made heads turn and was different to many of the women at the Court in those days. By portraying Anne Boleyn as black adds to the intrigue and contrast between herself and other Courtiers. Also there is possibly the comparison between the colour of her skin and the colour of her heart Anne was described as 'Black of Heart'.
Fair enough, but //you should know that racism is an absolute, something is either racist or it is not// is a general sweeping statement rather than personal to you or Zacs, and in my opinion, one that is completely incorrect.

roy - // It's really shocking how many ABers crank up a snide-fest against you isn't it, andy. //

It's not shocking - it's pointless.

What is shocking roy, is the amount of time and energy you spend picking pointless fights with me because, as I have pointed out several time, you don't like me, and I don't care.

Here you are again, avoiding a legitimate question I have asked you about your post, which is how the site works, because you would rather go off-point and have yet another pointless go at me, and then, oh sweet irony, you have the gall to accuse me of derailing!

Let's try this you go back to answering me question, take as read that you don't like me, and stop bringing it up every day, and you will find that I talk about the OP, and not about you and your weird obsession with reminding everyone how you don't like me.

Shall we see how that goes?

// No other ABer seems to get bullied the way you get bullied. //

I don't get bullied, I do get trolled, which is tiresome and distracting for everyone else who is bored with your stupid vendetta.

If you stop, your friends will stop, because they follow you slavishly, so let's try moving forward shall we?

Breathtakingly bizarre

Put up some samples of me saying I don't like you...I say it every day (apparently) so that shouldn't be difficult.

I'll leave the other BS for now.
