I rarely begin a thread these days and I very rarely get angry enough to hurt someone badly. I could hurt this chap.

I hope enough folk see his pictures to be able to identify him.

I'd probably think about doing something nasty to him for all of a five minute knee jerk reaction but that's about it. I hope he understands how incensed people are because of his actions and the reasons why it has made the news.

yeah, he may well have said that. He probably wouldn't have advocated you breaking the law and hurting him though, or would he have?
————-
Send him out mine clearing maybe, give him a sense of perspective for the people whose memorial he desecrated?

Or make him dig a trench in his back garden and get someone to lob grenades and small arms fire at him for a few weeks?

I do despair at modern society at times.....

LOL.....we directed them in that direction Chilii.
you asked how could anyone do this and my answer id he was probably *drunk* and lairy
—————
Not really an excuse.
‘Drunk and lairy’ killed a colleague of mine 3 weeks ago, his funeral is on Wednesday.

ha chilldoubt, I could hardly be called modern :)
I despair of people who do this sort of mindless vandalism too, but don't get quite so exercised that I want to hurt them physically
yes, that person is also an idiot, and that's something I could get really upset over - not mindless vandalism though

At the risk of sounding the big ‘I am’ I guess you wouldn’t quite get it as much if you haven’t served in HM Forces.

C’est la vie.
I used to live next to a war memorial and it was never respected. This wasn't youngsters showing disrespect, these were grown men using it as a public toilet. This is going back to the 70's and 80's...now it's had to be caged off. Grown men who are probably in their 50's or 60's now!

Stop blaming lack of respect on someones age!
I read that he has severe learning difficulties.

Seeing he is out on bail - correct for a low level offence - it appears he doesn't represent a threat to the public.

I'm sure justice will prevail.
It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organiser, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.

That’s always the irony in these events.
I read that he has severe learning difficulties.

That would be odd.
Generally those classed as ‘severe’ tend to have a full time carer in tow at all times.

Oh well.

Curiouser and curiouser....

What a strange world if none of us got upset over mindless vandalism. It's that sort of thinking that's led us to where we are today, Bednobs.
How far do we let them go until we get upset enough to respond?

If punishment wasn't so wishy washy I doubt there is one person on this thread who would feel like taking the law into their own hands. We should have confidence that crime will be dealt with appropriately but we don't.
The misunderstanding on threads like this is that if you are calm when calling out a cowardly despicable act then you aren't upset by it.

I could no more commit some of the acts mentioned on these pages by people of a mature age than fly to the moon.

I may also add that I know of many ex servicemen and women who would never use violence in the way described by some.
"taking the law into their own hands."

Are you suggesting that everyone on this thread would effect criminality and break the law?

How does that differentiate them from this mindless vandal then?

Please read it properly, Trevor.
"appropriately" is your key word here I expect gness
I don't think "appropriate" includes physically harming someone, you do and there's where we can't meet i'm afraid
I'd be happy to see him have a prison sentence, community service, fine or whatever. I'd be happy to see him taught some humility, but not in the way you advocate. I am not sure that not having been a service person makes much of a difference here. I am sure there are many service people who wouldn't want to be a vigilante thug. there are probably others, like you, who do.
I didn't say I wasn't upset about it - it's utterly moronic and upsetting, just that I would not be upset enough to want the kind of punishments here meted out to him
" and that's something I could get really upset over - not mindless vandalism though "

"I didn't say I wasn't upset about it "

Errr - yes you did.

I said I couldn't get really upset over it, not that I couldn't get upset. However, I can get upset and move on without entertaining bloodthirsty thoughts about retribution. The memorial will be replaced, other not so thick people will continue to show respect.
In chilledoubt's example though, it's simply heartbreaking - something to get really upset about

Come on, Bednobs. Look at what I said I would like to happen to him. 16.36 on Sunday if you didn't bother to read it.
yes you said you could hurt him, badly.
I think we should just agree to disagree without getting our feathers ruffled
Arrested? Another waste of public money on Legal Aid, what will the excuses be? Mental health? Poor childhood? Bullied at school? Get your bingo cards ready.
