Emmie; there has been an erosion of civility in recent years, arising from the anonimity of the internet, and the bad examples set by political figures. Verbal abuse, like physical violence, never wins an argument (in the sense of rational dispute and persuasion). Both forms of violence breed more of the same, and reason and common humanity take a knocking.

This doesn't seem to make sense until you know she's posted anti-Semitic remarks on t'internet and the schism in the Labour Party.

Although it's a poor excuse, my only defence is that working on building sites for 50 years may have coarsened me somewhat.
Believe it or not, I've heard even worse.
