Animal rights activists never mention halal meat, as they are part and parcel of the same set of people that have unwavering support of the Muslim communities and all their traditions, so they would be tearing themselves inside out trying to reconcile the two issues, so they just ignore it.
I am against breeding and slaughtering animals in order to provide us with food that we like but do not need. I don't know a lot about kosher or Halal, but what I have heard does not sound very pleasant - designed to comply with some old god's word and/or for health reasons in an ancient time with no refrigeration.
we have halal here i don;t happen to agree with it, but as one poster has explained chicken farming here is barbaric. I know that one must keep an open mind, but reckon if we knew half of what went on in most abbatoirs then we would indeed become vegetarian
I think that a secular state would take animal welfare above the requirements of religions. Some religions used human or animal sacrifice as part of their rites and I think that wouldn't be felt acceptable nowadays. Slaughter and sacrifice as a sign of love or fear of god seems to me to be an obscenity, contradicting all my instincts of decent treatment for living entities. I think modern secular authorities should not protect such religious practices, any more tha FGM.
NJ; I don't think that we need meat, wither for health reasons of for economic reasons. I've lived without it for 50 years and am in reasonable health. How are you feeling?
NJ, I think we don't need meat. In fact I know that I don't need meat. Are you about to propose reasons other than health in favour of meat? Perhaps you feel it is economically necessary for the economy? I'm here to listen.
//I've lived without it for 50 years and am in reasonable health. How are you feeling?//
I've lived with it ever since I could chew and I feel absolutely fine. Whether we need it for health or economic reasons I care not a jot. I need it because without it I would not have the sort of diet I enjoy. I also don't like or cannot eat many of the meat substitutes that non-meat eaters enjoy so my diet would not be very balanced.
i wonder if such a ban will ever happen here, you see lot's of animal rights marches etc, but they dont mention such slaughter, only chicken farming? and pigs have feelings pun, i would be a good idea to ban it.
who knows it may lead to an exodus of people to a pro halal country
may even put off some of the dinghy arrivals.
anyway back to the post, halal is rife in London, most of markets that i have frequented in the past like those in Brixton mainly are halal butchers Same with Wood Green. I won;t buy from them at all
I don't think it's hypocritical, fender. Humans are designed to eat meat. And in spite of being a vegetarian for many years, that's seems reasonable.
Not wanting to abuse animals who are alive, obviously isn't the same as suggesting they should never be born.
Emmie, some of my shoes are leather, and I do eat eggs and cheese and sometimes eat fish and very occasionally a bit of ham or (very rarely) wild boar. I'm not a fanatic or fundamentalist, but I think it's better to be a bit humane than not humane at all. I know that's not very well put, but it's all I can manage.
emmie, vested interest..i think if the public had a vote, it would be 99% ban it, there are only so many jews and muslims in the uk.
it would come down to who benefits cash wise, or let's not offend
so and so..but that's not the 99%.
