Just to chip in to your lovely argument. My Mum was Scottish, my Dad was solidly Yorkshire (back to 1600s that we can trace). No way can I somehow be separated from my family - or them from me. I have never felt English actually, always Yorkshire/Scottish - so there appears nowhere for me to go! As a fail-safe I feel British. I have been working on trying to feel English - but it doesn't feel 'right'.
