Did Boris say if schools are open tomorrow?? When do they close?? Also what about people coming into the country from abroad by air etc? Do they get tested when they come in? Everyone should have to wear a mask in the street like in Spain or get arrested.

I've not heard it, so no comment on the delivery. Only the timing. Weeks too late.

Not convinced I buy the excuse that this is the "fault" of the new variant, either. Only speculative, and I'd be happy to be corrected, but I would have expected something similar to be necessary around about now even if there had not been a mutation. As it is, relieved that Johnson has taken the necessary step of implementing a lockdown, but less impressed that it is time-limited. The correct time to end lockdown is when the figures call for it, which will be when daily new cases are orders of magnitude smaller than currently -- and/or when vaccination programmes have been rolled out sufficiently. If that means extending the restrictions into March and April, so be it.

jim- Isnt it time limited only in the sense that it will be reviewed. Not sure a remember when, was it 3 weeks but 'after half term' was mentioned for schools so that sounds like late Febuary. Am assuming he wants to give some hope and let peopel think the timescales are manageable rather than suggest it could be months. Its a puzzle why they didnt announce the schools closure weeks ago- better to close it before today and reviewed it late Jan rather than sending primaries back for just one day.

I may have misunderstood about the time-limiting (if so, it's my fault, as I have only skimmed the guidance).

It's easy to explain the delay in schools closure: it's the Government failing, again, to have any foresight or planning. How Williamson is still in his job I have no idea.
