i think we in the uk were doing ok until we were hit with the new virulent strain . . .
That was in September before the second wave. The story looks different today.

No we weren’t. We had the highest death rate in Europe from the beginning. Twice as many have died in the UK than Germany, a country of similar population.
The new strain isn’t any more deadly, and the second wave came long before the UK strain took off.

Germany is 47% larger than the uk, which is likely to be a factor
Italy and Belgium have a worst death rate compared to us.

Discharging vulnerable people from hospitals to Care Homes that didn’t have any PPE at the time, was more of a factor. It is the single reason our death rate exploded compared to nearly everyone else.

I meant total deaths, not death rate which is different.
