The TV didn't close down as such but all scheduled broadcasts were cancelled in favour of the news.
Jack; Did you have a television in Feb. 1952? If so you must have been quite posh :0)
Cant imagine a TV closedown now. What would if the Queen died on say, Christmas Day? I dont think she should abdicate, just carry on.
I wonder when she last went abroad
When I look at USA, a republic seems so unattractive

We didn't have a TV in 1952. I was referring to Lankeela's post re the deaths of Kennedy/Churchill.
I think the Queen will eventually become the oldest person in the country
Reading extracts from Alan Bennet's diary of last year (LRB, 7th Jan.)
Bennet who is 7 years younger than the queen wrote on 8th November, on watching the service from the Cenotaph:

'...... meanwhile the wreath laying has started, which I'm always impressed by. In the unlikely event of my being asked to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph I'd have to decline, if only because I couldn't walk the few steps backwards it requires. Not the least of the Queen's achievements is that she can still do it in her nineties.'
