would you accept a tax increase to give the NHS staff a bigger pay rise? If everyone who clapped agreed they could pay them more but I wonder how many would actually agree to paying for it?

No. Abolutely not.
No, I wouldn't, for reasons given on another thread. To give them the 1% is already giving them preferential treatment - even though it doesn't look like much.
I'd happily rather pay more NI than stand outside the house to do my virtue signalling clapping duty. I understand there are people that would rather do it the other way around though.
no and I am retired NHS
PS I didn't clap either
no.
No chance. I already pay
Plenty in tax thanks.
Doesn't that mean the NHS staff would also have a tax increase?
Government ministers should be explaining that the money that would otherwise have gone to an NHS staff pay rise has been given to their mates in botched government PPE contracts.
What’s happened to the bus money?
i think it said could not will but that seems a long time ago now,
thats of course before covid stuck its ugly head above the parapet.
Would 'happily' pay more tax as all the 100 + billion cost of pandemic needs to be paid for and really needs income tax or vat almost doubling for a few years . But not just to pay nurses m. Imagine if nurses got say 5% increase and then were told income tax had gone to 25p in pound for all so there no better off. The goverment sadly would be slated if it put up tax as it foolishly promised not to increase them so its hands are tied.
My family has a few nurses so 5% would be nice but its not life changing and should all hospital doctors get 5% too. Or 12.5%? No chance. It would have such a knock on effect for police, teacher's, carer's and council staff and should state benefits also go up by the same?
40% VAT? Really?
Increasing VAT like that would simple stop people spending which would lead to more businesses going under. Bit short-sighted thinking there.

Also, a doubling of income tax? Really?

Who will house all those people who will no longer be able to pay their mortgage or rent?

Yep, you really haven’t thought it through.
They have had a 15 percent rise over the past three years.
