(Tories have made lots of noise about some of these but made very little progress).

untitled: "more affordable housing" - yes, what we need is a game changer like TGL's council house sales. The government should come up with a way to get youngsters out of the rent trap so they can buy a house. I have a few ideas, eg I know people paying £1000+ a month in rent when they could buy the house they are in for half that as a mortgage but as they are paying a grand a month they can never save up enough for a deposit. There must be some scheme that the government can devise to get around that.

Thatcher's council house sales - and the refusal to let councils reinvest the proceeds in new housing stock - are a big reason why the problem exists at all... jolly good if you were lucky enough to be buying your first home around then, not so much for everyone else...

my parents lived in a council house and so did my husband's mum. They brought us up to work and save and none of us have ever needed to ask for council or social housing. We aren't geniusses or especially lucky, we worked and saved. Yes I know times are different, even before Covid, and I know I sound like an old fart but we didn't expect holidays or everything new or the latest tech....mumble grumble mumble

Trouble is Labour have a lot of ground to make thanks to Oh Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell’s crazy policies.They now have a leader in SKS who people can’t relate too.So unfortunately don’t see this changing anytime soon they need some thinkers line Anthony Crosland and big hitters like Denis Healey before they can start to make inroads into the Tory lead.

and in the old days... you could. Average house prices were usually about four times average income... it's now more than double that, and rising... wonderful if you already own a house - especially if you bought it before about 1995. Bad luck if you were born too late to do that.

Untitled, you sounded just like the Japanese's peace lily moaning then. Dont forget many of us had sky high interest rates and massive unemployment where homes were lost. It wasnt all roses you know.

Plus mortgages were only 21/2 times joint salary and often overtime not taken into account. You had to go to a buildo where money was allocated every month from the savers so not like now where cash is raised immediately on the money markets.

maybe just my opinion but when we have to tighten our belts and start having to pay back all the money we have borrowed over the last year I think the tories will be viewed in a good light but when the free dinners ,free hand outs ,added benefits , furlough payments have all dried up and the poor get poorer and the big dividends start getting paid out the people will start looking at labour to address the differences in society
