.....perhaps it's a good time to see if any S N P types have any answers to the famous 10 questions regarding Scotland potentially leaving the UK, never have yet but hope springs eternal.....
1) How will you replace the funding you get from England?
2) Are you happy to continue using the pound but have no control of it?
3) How will you service your part of the national debt?
4) How will you stop the inevitable exodus to England once the decision has been made?
5) Will you continue to offer free prescriptions, university etc ?
6) …if so how far are you prepared to raise taxes for those that remain?
7) How will you attract investment to, what will have to be a high taxation area?
8) How will you replace and fund the parts of the UK infrastructure that you now take for granted? Eg military, police, public transport?
9) are you prepared to adopt the EURO as a condition of joining the EUSSR?
10) Are you prepared to construct a border as a condition of joining the EUSSR?
The SNP have never addressed any of the above perhaps our resident "independence" supporters would like to have a go.
9) are you prepared to adopt the EURO as a condition of joining the EUSSR?
Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania, Sweden and Denmark have all been allowed to join the EU without adopting the Euro.
Why would Scotland be any different?
The problem would be I doubt very much the EU would accept a Country using GDP. Particularly Macron.
Of course joining the Euro could also be a problem if using GDP as it would be based on the UK not Scotland, and if Scotland chose the Groat (or whatever) the the currency would be too fledgling to meet the Euro criteria.
The Barnett Formula is not law, it is just an instrument the Treasury uses to divvy up the pot. It has been used for over 40 years.
Thatcher, Major, Cameron, May and Johnson could have all ditched it anytime they wanted - but they didn’t.
I repeat my question. Would you rather the Scottish Government collected its own taxes instead?
// I doubt very much the EU would accept a Country using GDP. Particularly Macron. //
LOL. They accepted us for over forty years. Even if Macron is against (which I doubt) he is one of 28 votes.
Once an independence timetable has been agreed, Scotland can adopt the £uro BEFORE it rejoined the EU. A country does not have to belong to the EU to adopt the currency.
But Scotland had a referendum on devolution and voted ‘Yes’.
Are you saying that the results of referendums should be ignored, if we get the wrong result ?
roadman: "why do they have to "replace the funding" they are part of the UK they deserve the funding why should they pay it back " - is English your first language? "Replace" means find alternative sources once the supply has gone, geddit?
gromit: "Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania, Sweden and Denmark have all been allowed to join the EU without adopting the Euro.
Why would Scotland be any different? " - because Scotland would be seen as another basket case and thus they could make them dance any jig they wanted to let them join. They would demand they joined the Euro and probably they'd have to build a border.
gromit: "But Scotland had a referendum on devolution and voted ‘Yes’.
Are you saying that the results of referendums should be ignored, if we get the wrong result ? " who is suggesting we ignore referendum results? The EUSSR do that, and Scotland is planning to follow suit with another "once in a generation" illegal referendum.
