When those manifesto promises were made there was no foreknowledge of Covid, things are different now, I think people would have accepted a rise in income tax just as well. We are in a radically different economic and social climate now, we need additional funding for health and social care and the money t red has been chopped up for firewood.
All this talk about the cap being unfair because people with more money or valuable property pay the same as everyone else is in my mind wrong. Those who worked harder, saved more, shouldn't have to pay for the rest who didn't and those who couldn't will be protected to some extent.. I am only sorry for the next generations who will still be paying for the Covid burden.
Now we also need to make it easier for the established and positively assessed care providers to build or redevelop more residential care and nursing homes, more supply will moderate prices through competition. Maybe priority for unused local authority land, and when new hospitals are considered factor in associated care facilities on site with possibly subsidised partnerships. Add in a better inspectorate as well, with real powers to deal with the poor providers.
