ymb, they use other characters to widen the storytelling possibilities and also the product's commercial appeal. Lois was right there in the first Superman comic, so they've had more than 80 years to drop her if readers weren't interested.

Okay, putting on my comic book nerd glasses on (bit of tape in the middle holding them together).

As has been mentioned, this isn't Clark Kent/Kal El Superman, this is his son Jonathan Kent, whose been around for around five or six years and has been Superboy for most of them. He's not the first gay/bi superhero, and he won't be the last. It's nothing new, it's hardly bandwagon jumping as I've seen banded around and the fuss will probably die down whenever the inevitable happens and Clark redons the cloak.

I don't know who the Dark Knight is - but can he still be called the Dark Knight? Even though he has no objection to it, Shaun Wallace from the Chase has had problems with his nickname, the Dark Destroyer, so much so that Bradley Walsh has been known to refer to him as The Barrister. Can that upset anyone? Who knows?

Naomi, The Dark Knight is the classic nickname for Batman, given to him for his black outfit and his tendency to emerge suddenly from the shadows. I've never seen any backash about the name before, as it has nothing whatsoever to do with race.
