She is the same age as my grandmother. My nanna still lives independently including making bread and apple pies. She has been told to rest. Her attitude is she'd rather continue doing what she wants.

Ok, she's not the queen. But she might as well be to me.

At that age every day is a gift, but it's a gift that they choose to use as they see fit.

I agree with Barmaid really, if she wishes to rest up and let others take the load then fine but if the plan is to wrap her in cotton wool until the Junilee than I feel it's unfair.

We both said that when Prince Philip died, the Queen lost her real reason for living. She has been driving herself on willpower and duty - and it's taken its toll. I don't really think she'll last until the planned Jubilee - and I don't know if I hope she does. To do so will mean more mornings waking alone, countered by the work she has devoted herself to. An admirable woman.

Personally, I think she will remain Queen until the end of her life, but Charles will be on hand. She's still very astute. I have a very astute aunt of her age, and had another in Australia until last year, again in her mid Nineties.

Anne, I referred to the Prince of Wales as Charlie, but as a non-royalist, I have no issue with Betty either.
